I am having the same problem and yes that is the early sign of a bad alternator. Or a bad ground, you should probably have it tested. Alternator cost about 120, the install is a little tedious due to its location.

Go to an Autozone. They will test it for you. But yah, looks like your alternator is going bad. Also you can check with Steve at Tousley Ford on a price.

ummm before u say its ur alt. i thought the same thing and it was a 20 something dollar pigtail which is a SUPER common problem for the svtf , search in the forums for alt pigtail and u should find ALOT of info, also check all grounds , my buddy had some corrosion on one of his grounds and thought it was his batt or alt.

 

update. just got back from autozone, alt and battery and starter are all A ok, i will check grounds, and pigtails. another theory is the air conditioning compressor, i am not sure if this happens when the air conditioner is on i dont use it often (about as often as this thing happens, lol).

 

Did they get it hot or do a quick test sometimes it'll only fail when its hot because the wearable parts are copper and graphite just a little info before you put it back in or find a local rebuilder most will pop the rear casting to check for free

 

what that guy said ^ i have had autozone tell me my alt was fine. so i just brought the car in to a shop, and guess what? alt was bad according to them.

 

well i did watch him do the test with the little portable machine, i even have the slip of paper that tells me the results. here is what he did, plugged in the machine, told me to turn the engine on, turn on high beams and AC full blast, turn off engine, this was repeated twice.

 

Alternators.....don't even want to go there. I wonder what the record is for number of alternators one SVTF has consumed.....If I don't have it I'd be surprised.

 

ok so update. i have found what may or may not be a bad ground. the wire coming from the positive terminale is beginning to fray. would this cause the symptoms described, especailly when making a hard right turn. i dont know if there is any correlation but sense stuff would want to shift to the left pulling on the ground

 

A wire coming from the positive terminal can't be a ground. That would be the opposite of what it is.

Anyway, frayed wires are never good, so try replacing/fixing it.

 

If your car doesn't have an aftermarket tune, I'd wager the diagnose is: It's an SVT Focus with a stock tune. They all did that stock.

 

^^hmm, i dont mean to question your expertise but why would ford make a car that did that, and if this is infact true were there any recalls or anything that could be fixed under warranty, as for the grounds, where should i check to see if they are bad and what am i looking for exactly?

 

Yes, the stock tune on the '02 and '03 models had a problem with the alternator light/engine speed. Mine ('03, red, fast) would nearly die as I slowed to a stop. Ford had a TSB on it and I had my dealer reflash with the Ford updated tune. The problem disappeared.

I was hoping mine had a bad ground also. No such luck. Was only putting out 8.2... Ford wants $500 to put in a new one. Thanks for putting it in such a good location with easy access...

Yeah, get a remanufactured unit from Advance Auto. $180. If you're doing it for the first time...more like 2+ hours. Not bad at all, though.
