Fall Beast Drive-TBD

OK, with visions of a repaired Cougar on the horizon, I'd like to possibly plan some sort of springtime 2-day trip to drive the "666" out in eastern AZ. I've got April 21st marked as my target date to have the car repaired, so lets look at after that. I want a couple weeks to get the clutch broken in first though.

I would like to do a Saturday/Sunday trip, as last year it seemed like some folks couldn't swing a Friday departure and thus we had fewer people than anticipated. For May, I know there are a couple SCCA Solo events scheduled for around the middle of the month, but I only really need to do one or the other (both would be nice, but not needed). So sometime in the month of May would be the likely target. Not sure we want to get into doing this after Memorial Day or not, but if everyone is OK with it thats fine to go into June.

What are everyone's general opinions on date?

If you've never seen it, here's a couple previews.

Re: Spring "666" cruise

Well the "plan" was for folks to join us the next day, but I think Robert's son was the only one who actually joined us on Day 2. I've heard Robert say it could be done in 1 day, but from the trip I went on in October, I really do not want to drive that much in 1 day. Coming "down" the 666 is NOT something you want to do tired.

Anyone have any opinions on what they'd like to do? Going BEFORE Memorial Day will help us avoid all the "summer campers" near Luna Lake (assuming thats where we stop again), but there is so much going on in May that I don't know if I can squeeze it in there (2 autocrosses on May 12th and May 20th).

Re: Spring "666" cruise

I'd love to do this.. and do not want to miss it again. My main problems (stripped axle & missing a-arm bushings) will be fixed in a couple weeks. My new problem is a failing fuel pump, which is only good for the first 90 miles worth of gas (not much of an NFS run). I'm saving up for the "revised" (more expensive) pump... so I should be all set in about a month.

Re: Spring "666" cruise

if it interests anyone, i loaded my footage onto my computer just now, hopefully I can get some video up relatively soon. I also found footage from Yarnell which was a year ago when i was still running around basically open header!

Re: Spring "666" cruise

I believe someone had some footage of Yarnell from inside my car, IIRC. I don't recall the screename though, someone from East Valley, IIRC. I can't wait to see it Chewy, you probably have footage from the part of the road immediatly preceeding my video (before we stopped at the hairpin), the stuff that I didn't get because my video camera spontaneously stopped filming. Hence why I'm so eager to go back, I want "payback" on my camera for screwing up the best parts!

yeah, my video cuts out right before we pull off at the hiar pin and thats where the camera died.

the guy you're thinkin of is Troy1nonly

Re: Spring "666" cruise

Yep, thats the one. Based on how badly I drove on that first Yarnell trip, that video may be better off "destroyed" anyway! I almost threw poor Troy through the windshield with my downshifting....

Re: Spring "666" cruise

Well I won't make my deadline for getting my car done this Saturday, and work screwed me out of next weekend so I'll probably have to finish the car up during the week (ugh) of May 1st, since I have two days off then. Hopefully tax returns will be in by then as well, we'll see.

How does June look for everyone? The weather is awesome up there then, but there would probably be more campers than normal then as well. If we got camp space "reserved" for us though ahead of time, it wouldn't be as big of a deal. Plus it gives Tom some time to get Roush back up and running, I know he would enjoy the 666.

Bobby, theres a Nascar event that you really don't *need* to attend this weekend

But that won't help my clutch and flywheel get here any sooner, lol.

Re: Spring "666" cruise

Dunno, my car will be up and running Saturday though so I'd just need about 3 weeks advance notice to put in at work. I'm game for anytime, just not sure how this would work AFTER Memorial Day with Summer campers and such.
