Finally a worthy replacement for the SVT

As some know, I sold my SVT quite some time ago and replaced it with a turbo'd miata, which was pretty crazy fast, just not to practical. I coupled that with a Tacoma truck which was used to tow my kart (which I no longer own). So with the possibility of a new job coming and no need for a towing vehicle, I decided to swap the two cars for one more practical car...

My requirements were simple... Fun to Drive, Truly seats 4, Some sense of luxury, and not "a dime a dozen" type of car... It came down to the Audi A3 and the Mini Clubman JCW (John Cooper Works). The Mini won hands down, the A3 has the sexier exterior, but the "fun to drive" award went hands down to the Mini...

The clubman is hardly the best looking car on the road, but honestly when you're behind the wheel, you love the car. This is everything my SVT was to me, just better in every category except mabye looks. More Power, Better Handling (yes better handling), more luxury, better built, and even more rare than the SVT ;)

So here it is in all it's 4x4 glory...

The interior, and you can see in the 2nd pic, why we needed the clubman and not the regular mini.

There will be very little if any engine mods on this car. However I will be replacing every piece of exterior chrome with carbon fiber replacements (yes they are readily available parts).

And I'm going to throw a set of 18x8 Axis Widetrack wheels on the car with 225/35/18 tires. I'd go 17x8 but the only tire that has a good rotating diameter to match with stock is a 235/35/17 which is tough to fit. So I moved up to 18's which will probably work given the "bus" like nature of this car.

I don't like much of anything there except for the color, but I know that you put a lot of time and research into this so I'm sure that you're happy :) Plus you're paying for it and not me, so I don't have to like it

Love the Mini, not a bit fan of the Clubman however. Its kind of like getting a hot girl but she's still got a big bum, but I completely understand your reasoning for getting it, and if you like it; then thats all that matters!

Actually I dont like the clubman much either

But I need the clubman, so that's why I have it. But the driving dynamics are really nice. The low end torque is awesome, and the handling is extremely responsive. Just the way I like a car. The car "feels" like it has a bit of toe in, because turn-in is immediate and torque steer is the worst I've ever felt in any car before. Of course I absolutely love the torque steer, but definitely drive with 2 hands when having fun.

The interior quality is top notch, the metal is solid and the door shut like they mean it!. It's a great car and when I'm inside of it, I just totally enjoy the drive. Of course I'm still babying it during the break in but someday I'll rip it loose.

The "sport" button makes throttle response even better, it "feels" as if it engages the clutch slightly lower, the steering is a bit more responsive as well, and finally it allows a couple extra pounds of boost :D

It's a great car, I would have LOVED to get the normal mini and maybe someday I will but for now, this is what I needed and it's still just great. I think coilovers are the first mod, so it will be going lower, but I wont be able to dump it with 18's.

You GOT it! wo0t!

You must be as happy as a little guhhl... *touches nipples*

I like it! Hey - any chance that you'd paint those black rear corners body color? I was telling Dana that I saw one that was all one color and it looked even better.

I can't wait to see it dropped and on those Axis wheels you posted. Yep! This is a car that you won't need to mod very much.

Is the wheelbase longer compared to the standard mini?
yes the wheel base is longer... and you'd think it actually wouldn't rotate as quick as the regular mini, in fact it rotates QUICKER than the regular mini. The car has zero understeer, it's awesome!

Yea I think with about 1" of lowering, new wheels, tint and the Carbon Fiber treatment it will look decent.

As for the color matching the back panels, you can't because the beltline (that chrome line between window and body) doesn't extend through that, so it looks odd.. I totally wanted to do that too.

Awesome. I still think it's ugly.

But I am jealous .....

If I get a chance, I'll get a video of the exhaust. It's pretty incredible under load. The car at idle sounds like you'd expect a 1.6 liter to sound.. weak and quiet.. but under load that exhaust really has a nice tone.

I really like the stock wheels - why do you want to replace them?

BTW can you get some more interior shots, ie, from the back hatch looking forward? I want to get a feel for how big the inside is. Currently starting my search for a replacement car for my wife's corolla.
