i put a new set of shifter cables on my 05 focus st.

The reason i put new ones in is i had a clutch put in and they broke the locking clip and the shift cable wont stay in the bracket. and they claim they didnt do it. ( of course)

When i go into 1st, 3rd, or 5th it is really really soft you dont even feel it go in. but 2nd, 4th and reverse are just fine. I have adjusted the cables but it dont seem to get any better. i dont know if i am adjusting them right or not! Can someone please help me out here i am not sure what to do.

Thanks
Michael

i dont know much about the shift linkage but i believe it self adjusts... meaning no matter what you do 'adjust' it will self adjust to the soft feel. did you replace the pin? did you put a new stock clutch in or an aftermarket? do you thing its the way they put the clutch in, or are you 100% its the cables?

its a stock clutch that was put in about 3 months ago. i know its the shift cable because the locking cap is broken and wont let the pin lock into place. it didnt do this until i put the new cables in.
There is a proceedure to adjusting the shift cables. There is a special tool that is supposed to hold the shifter in the neutral position (just have someone hold it there)then you push the orange release buttons on the linkage connectors right at the transmission, make sure everything is in neutral and the shifter is in neutral (have someone sit inside and hold it) then release the adjusters and you should be good.

That might get you where you want to go. The positive feelign of going into gear comes from the detents on the transmission shift tower clicking into place. So if the adjustment is out a little, it might not be reaching the detent.

Good luck!

If you don't mind me asking, where can the orange release buttons be found. (01 ZX3)

It is occasionally hard for me to shift into second, also it is extremely hard for me to shift into reverse!

Take the air box off, look down on top of the trans at the end of your shift cables. there are two places they connect, one right on top of the other. one will be black, the other will be white. Each one of those connectors has a orange release button built into the middle of them, press the orange piece in to release the cable from the connector, then make sure the cable, shifter and transmission are all in neutral, then release the button.
Note, the orange button should lock in the depressed position, but sometimes the little clips break off. if it stays depressed just push the little release button to the side of the orange button.

I hope that helps.

I'm not completely sure where this is located:
1. in car?
2. engine bay?
3. underneath car?

Transmission and the shifter is not something I am familiar with. The most work I've done on the shifter was taking off the plastic surrounding it (i.e. the plastic piece the shifter boot is attached to.)

If there was a picture somewhere that would be helpful, but I rather you not go out of your way to post one!

I'm guessing those orange circles are the button I'm supposed to press?
Yep.

I actually figured out that I do not need to adjust these because they are not the problem.

I actually broke the shifter mount (cracked it from shifting too hard, dont ask lol)

So now I am shifting with a loose shifter (very very hard to get into reverse without actually holding the shifter base with one hand, and shifting with the other)

I am gonna take some pictures tonight and start a new thread to get everyone's opinions!

That does happen with these plastic shifter bases.
It should be part# YS4Z-7220-GA, and is only $22.73 FORDSVTPARTS (Steve at Tousley Ford).

Damn Ford.
I went there to inquire about that plastic piece I cracked from my intense shifting.
$60 plus tax for a damn piece of plastic!!

I ended up doing some minor repairs to the existing cracked piece fo free!
