The fan control from 1 - 3 doesn't work except for 4.

Sounds like the series resistor has blown or become disconnected.

I was looking at the schematics in the Chilton manual the other day, and I noticed there's the obligatory arrangement of a 5 position switch with resistors connected between each pole. Position 4 connects straight to the 12V supply, so if that's the only speed that works, that would suggest that (at least) the top resistor in the chain is somehow open circuit (corroded, disconnected or otherwise broken).

If I get a chance tonight, I'll check where the resistor lives. You should be able to test it with a multi-meter.

 

The switch itself is probably toast, but the resistor could be the culprit too. I've seen both problems, but I've seen the switch fail more often than the resistor by probably a 3:1 ratio.

 

I had that same problem. The heater resistor went out, so I bought a replcacement on eBay. The resistor is in the firewall area behind the radio/glovebox, its a 5min swap.

Lamarwh: I think it is the heater resister because couple weeks ago when it rained, water was leaking
in near the glovebox. I hope I can locate this resistor.

Did you find the resistor? Where exactly is it? My car has the same problem.

 

I think the resistors are on or near the blower motor.

I replaced my resistor and the problem was fixed.

 

Not to necro post but my fan only works on settings 1-3. I replaced the resistor and got goose egg.

How do you replace the heater switch?

i've had a similar problem. My fan does not work on any of the settings. I have already replaced the resistor so i know that's not the problem. Can anyone tell me how i can change the switch or refer me to a link or website with the directions? I would really appreciate it.
