Ford to go "Capless"

The capless fuel filler Ford developed for the Ford GT is making its way across the company's Ford and Lincoln-Mercury line in the next several years, the company says, starting with the 2008 Lincoln MKS. Instead of cappage, the models will have a flap that opens when pressed with the gas pump nozzle, and it'll keep fumes from escaping -- a feature the company is applying to its environmentally sensitive messaging. Having lost a few hundred gas caps -- running over one such that it shot out and nearly took out the attendant's eye -- we heartily approve.

There are two main reasons you will see a move to this by the industry:

1. Environmental issues
2. The "greying" of America*

*The average age of the average American is climbing. There will be more and more designs catering to this need. Many people with arthritis cannot open a gas cap easily.

If you are physically unable to remove the fuel cap on your car, you probably shouldn't be driving it.
Yeah, let's get all the "crips" off the streets. :screwy:
You guys are too funny.:lol:

But seriously, I have to agree with Max. If you don't have the physical strength to open a gas cap, I'm not so sure I want you behind the controlls of a 2 ton hunk of steel.

Sounds like a Permacap.... that one you can buy at BAT.
yep. you can get the same thing at Advance Auto now too, but made by Stant.
You mean the one that is bound to trigger your "check gas cap" light?

sigh, crips? so anyone with arthritis is a cripple now and shouldn't drive? not being strong enough to open the cap isn't the only reason to design this. many adults who are not elderly get arthritis. i think it is a good decision.

have had the permacap on two foci for a year each and no check gas cap light has ever come on.

OMG!

I hope you melonheads that are bagging on people with arthritis are aflicted with it VERY SOON!

And when you are, please stop driving your car, even though the level of that condition that would make it difficult or impossible to remove your gas cap, would not keep you from safely operating your vehicle.

Melonheads. Ignorant melonheads.

I don't see why they need to cater to people with arthritis. Maybe the upscale car or two, but not all of them.....
I don't believe they are 'catering' to people with arthritis. They are making a change that is apparently better for the environment, while at the same time less work for the arthritic...

but my money is on the fact that a few hundred thousand gascaps a year equals more money in the stockholder's pockets.

*my rant was about ignorance, that's all*

Very true, gas caps are like 8-15 dollars if I remember from my dodge days.... So yeah. I can see the cost-savings in it. And CARB's supposedly better for the enviorment as well, but I would like to see the proof of it before I say anything more. And I thought there was a system to catch vapors already anyways?
