GM launches giveaway contest of 1,000 vehicles

Mon Jan 5,12:14 PM ET

DETROIT, United States (AFP) - General Motors announced a 25 million dollar giveaway promotion that will allow consumers to win some of the automaker's most popular vehicles.

The promotion announced Sunday at the 2004 North American International Auto Show in Detroit is linked to the company's OnStar communications service, which includes features such as emergency road service and global positioning information.

The giveaway includes vehicles such as the Hummer H2 and the Cadillac CTS.

The so-called "Hot Button" program allows consumers visiting a dealer selling OnStar-equipped cars to activate the service. They are told immediately if they've won one of 1,000 vehicles.

The promotion begins Monday and will run for 56 days. The company makes the odds of winning at one in 5,500.

The world's largest automaker has set the pace before with aggressive promotions in the past few years. The introduction of zero-percent and aggressive low-rate financing in late 2001 began at GM and was followed not long after by other automakers.

The two-month giveaway, which will include 2004 model year vehicles from all of the company's eight brands, is designed to spur traffic during a traditionally slow time of year for the industry.

"It's a strong traffic moving program for us," said John Smith, GM group VP of sales, service and marketing in an interview on the sidelines of the Detroit auto show Monday.

GM is billing the "Hot Button" program as the biggest two-month giveaway in history.

I have seen that commercial airing several times already and it should be interesting to see what happens.

Sort of off topic:
During a comparison test of 4 midsized family sedans that Motor Trend was conducting one of the test drivers was hurling a 2004 Chevy Malibu LT through the slolom cones, the OnStar System activated and a voice came on the speaker, asking "Have you just been in an accident? Chris Walton(test driver) replied,"I'm fine".On the next run another operator called asking the same thing.

.I wonder if the OnStar system on the Malibu is calibrated to sensitively.

That's hilarious... they're only supposed to be connected if the airbag sensor goes off.

Oh man, that's great!

Well, at least they finally found a gimmick to move some cars off the lots. Give them away!

I'd love to win a GM. So I could sell it and but a Ford. Honestly there's no GM product that I'd really like to have. Even if given to me.
That Corvette really sucks.

Even if I won a Corvette, I'd still sell it. Just not my cup of tea.

i'd keep the vette its the only great car they make. Everything else is just a clone of another car. They all have [censored] quality and build sucks ass too.

The Caddy CTS doesn't have a clone, I don't think anything else is on the DTS platform. The Saab 95 doesn't either. The 93 is on the same platform as the Malibu and Pontiac G6, but could hardly be called a clone.

I too would keep the Vette I think they're awsome and the best bang for the buck for a car in it's class. And I'll admit, I've alway's been a Chevy guy but I drive a focus cause other than the Vette Chevy doesn't make anything as much fun as the Focus to drive. But they're finally starting to see the light and are slowly introducing new stuff.

I question your quality comment though. I'm a fleet manager with a fleet of about 7000 vehicles here in the state of Florida, and nationally we have a fleet of about 165,000 vehicles. We buy our vehicles directly from the three US manufactures and therefore recieve every recall and TSB they send out. We annually process a lot of recalls and TSB's from both Ford and Chrysler (Chrysler leading) and very few (by comparison) for any of our GM products. Our database also shows lower maintainence costs for our GM products compared to Ford and Chrysler. This is what I see every day at my job, and we run statistical data on our entire fleet nationally every month so we're pretty much up to date. We just processed a boat load of Chrysler recalls today .. they just won't stop coming
