Hi everyone, I recently bought a 2004 ford focus ztw, with 128,000 miles on it for 2,900$ including registration. Pretty good deal the paint is really good it has some bumps and scrapes here and there but overall a nice looking car.

since buying it I have changed the front brake discs and pads. No check engine light and it runs pretty good. I’m goin to change the rear drum and brakes as well as the wheel bearing and hub assembly next. After that I plan on changing the timing chain kit and replacing the oil and water pump while at it.

The thing is I find various parts that look very different but say they are for the 2.3l PZEV engine so still figuring wich parts to buy. After that I plan on changing spark plugs, and doing a flush on all fluids; although I will probably skip tranny fluid but I am not certain yet.

As an inexperienced ford owner I am excited to get into discussions and conversations about this car. I hope some of yall will be able to answer questions I may have in the future.

thank you all and it’s good to be a wagon owner.

Congrats on the Focus ZTW — sounds like a solid find for the price!
It’s smart that you’re tackling the brakes and timing chain early; those maintenance items really pay off in the long run.
Feel free to ask anytime about parts or repairs — the Ford community is usually pretty helpful, and I’m here to help too!
Yeah my mechanic buddy checked out the car and was surprised by how good the car performed. Once we found out if the engine used a timing chain he recomended I change it, because if it were to fail it would be catastrophic for the engine. As for the breaks, every car I get I always change the brake discs and pads. I got a heavy foot im told, and I noticed that I may break harder than most people.
Do you currently or have previously owned a ford?

The 2.3 in your wagon is a Duratec.
The design life on that engine is 150k miles, without anyvalve adjustment or anything beyond regular oil and filter changes, and spark plugs every 100k.
I'd pull the cam cover and see if the engine looks clean inside. Check the chain for looseness and measure the valve clearance. If everything looks good I wouldn't consider replacing the timing chain. It will likely last another 150k or more miles.

My 2004 ZX3 now has 346,000 miles, with NO internal engine problems.Valve clearance was good when I replaced the cam cover gasket at around 250,000. It doesn't even use oil between changes.
I've serviced it with Mobil 1 5w30 every 10,000 miles, and have little doubt it will run another 150k without issue.
It's been the most durable engine I've had in any vehicle.

I did eventually start hearing some rattling from the intake flaps, which sounds like valvetrain noise, but is not. I replaced the intake manifold. It's still quiet as of now.

Wow very good advice I will do as you say.
What engine do you have in your zx3; 2.0 or 2.3???
The previous owner for my car most likely put 128,000 milk getting miles in it before I got it. Now I think I’m pushing the engine, or just the whole car in general, more than the previous owner. I put 5w20 oil first oil change, but after reading more of the owner manual the previous owner had made a note to use 5w30 so I will next oil change.
I’m looking into making suspension mods as well. Stock 15 inch rims want to switch to 17 inch svt rims. The offset is different and so is the hub core size but I’m sure it will work. 17 inch rims with some 215/45zr17 tires would grip!!! Looking to get coilovers for the front and lowering springs with shocks in the back. You know any good parts stores or distributors for these kinda things???
