so i have decided i would like to be different and get some green turn signals... for my 02 zx3 side markers and in light/grill. would i need a whole new wiring harness and different type of bulb or is there a place i can find some green bulbs? where i live i'm pretty sure there is no law against it, either way i don't care much

if you know anything, anything all.. please share :)
feel free to criticize my choice as well as i like to hear peoples opinions
thanks ;)

There is a law against it. Turn signals are required to be either amber or red if combined with brake-lights. Green is strictly prohibited because it can be mistaken by another driver as a green light giving them the right of way.

Its a cool idea, but its not safe.

To do it, you would need a clear turn indicator housing (found on ebay), and you would have to either find a green bulb, or get some sort of green fliter to place around the bulb.

Again though, this is highly illegal, and potentially hazardous to yourself and other drivers.

SVTF445 is correct. Here in Canada, it's also against the law. See Transport Canada's Technical Standards Document # 108, Rev. 4.

Also, a flashing green light might already be reserved for a specific use (like volunteer emergency services).

If you want to do it, those green lights can't be used when your car is on public roads, and you need to have the correct coloured turn signals working when you're actually driving around on roads. If you just use green turn signals, then you risk getting a ticket, or maybe worse.

Green is my favorite colour and I thought it would be pretty cool...

That is a good point with the green lights though, so I will switch it up to blue just to be different. I have a few tickets already so what's another few!

Thanks for everyones input. And anyone know where to get blue lights?

ok you know what... this whole "is it legal game" isn't fun anymore. besides i already have some police style strobes on there..

final decision will be made on either green or red... green because i like it and i don't care about legality, and red because it may look good on my black car

not 100% sure yet
thanks everyone

you'll get over it ;)

Not really, its idiots like you, typical high school kid who doesn't care about anything. Your the type of people that get us kicked out of places, or give the cops the reason to hassle us more.

To be honest, your idea is idiotic and i hope Darwin's theory of natural selection works for you.

fun while it lasts.. :)

everybody is a genius but if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life thinking its stupid....

i do care about things actually... right now my turn signals are to dark and therefore i am making them bright so people can see them.. i felt like doing some colours whats so bad about that? do you think there will be 100 other people copying what i do? no probably not, i'm not that large of an influence.

do you think police in vancouver and mentor talk to each other on a regular basis, if ever? probably not!! so don't blame me for your stupidity on the roads where YOU live..

it's not the first time someone has said one of my ideas is idiotic, but unlike you, other peoples opinions don't affect my thoughts in anyway. i just like to hear them, hence why i asked...

in conclusion... keep your opinions to yourself because clearly, nobody wants to hear them.. thanks for your and your input on the lights, have a good one ;)

You posted on a public forum asking for input INCLUDING criticism:

That's what you are getting. Most of these members are concerned about your choices and are just trying to educate you on why your choices are not sound. If you don't want to hear people share their concerns when you ask, then it might be best not to ask for opinions where ANYONE can give it.

thanks for your input kitty... i don't mind sounding like a "ricer/dumb kid"...
my thoughts on this are, turn signals are on for maybe 5 seconds depending on a number of variables... either way i don't find this to be long enough for anyone to get distracted... now you may feel differently, and thats fine too, everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
Unless you have Mach HIDs or ST170 lights, you are incorrect. On the Focus the parking lamp and turn signal are the same bulb. All hitting the turn signal does is make that bulb flash, so the lights will be on constantly in whatever color you choose.

Oh yeah, while we are at it, you need to change your signature as it is promoting street racing and we have a firm stance against any street racing talk on FJ.

Not really, its idiots like you, typical high school kid who doesn't care about anything. Your the type of people that get us kicked out of places, or give the cops the reason to hassle us more.

Now, this is one thing we don't allow, personal attacks on members, even if you don't agree with their views, please refrain from attacking them for it as that is against our guidelines as well.

:lock: Re: Green turn signals?

NeilM. You asked for an opinion, on an illegal act, and if you want stir up opinions and then tell them to keep it to themselves, then YOU need to leave this forum.
Again you asked for opinions.

As for my opinion on your subject: If you do it I think you should save it for the parking lots. Lights are specific colors on a car for a reason. Human reaction to a specific color is on habit most of the time and not a long thought process. Blue lights are meant to recognize Police and react accordingly. :lock:

i do know what i said and i am aware i contradicted myself and i'm sorry but i did not expect

either way lets drop all this crap and move on..

now, i understand the blue and i thought about that after too, but i don't think green will make much of an impact. i do realize some people are not paying attention and may confuse a flashing green light with a solid green and think its a traffic light, but i also believe there is a low chance of that occurring

Have you met an old person lately? ;);)

my grandmother thought a blinking LED on her dashboard was a green light.

It's illegal and dangerous.

Green = Paramedic (sometimes volunteer)
Blue = Volunteer Fire Fighter or EMS/Cops
Blue/Red = Cops
Red = Fire Dept/Cops

Impersonating emergency services is a pretty big deal, which is what they would say you are doing. Red is obviously the exception, but if you have red front indicators, someone could think you are going instead of coming. It's universally stupid.

If you want brighter bulbs buy brighter bulbs. I don't want to sound like an ass but switching to green or blue won't make it brighter or even really stand out if they are behind the Amber Lens. If you want a cool looking bulb that glows Amber and want to stick out get these. http://www.amazon.com/Sylvania-3157A-4157A-ST-Performance/dp/B000AMW0FQ They are bright and look cool. I've even put them in my brake lights and noticed a bit brighter light even behind the Red lens even after i tinted them. But if you still want to be brighter go LED's

so i feel like i should update you.. i went ahead and did it anyways...
what i did was i spliced off of the turn signal( major and ground wires i believe) and ran them to some green led strips i picked up on ebay.
end results look as such

they do not act as parking lights, those along with daytime running lights have been disabled

I think a bunch of you need to be stop being so quick to sling Darwin death wishes and rewind back to when you were 18 and made poor choices.

NeilM I think your idea is foolhardy. What you think looks cool and what is cool will change as you get older. Eventually you'll get to the point in your life where you realize that intentionally goading Johnny Law into F'ing with you get's old and you'll change your ways. That said, I'm glad you like the idea of modifying your car to be different. I just wish you had chosen something other than a pretty blatant, obvious, and dangerous way of doing so.

I think it would be much cooler if you used regular amber turn signals up front and wired those green LED strips to come on ONLY with the parking lights. You can use a standard 30A Bosch style relay to do it so they come on in the parking light position but extinguish in the headlight or off position. THAT would be cool. It would also be safe, and to some degree, legal as long as you're not using them on the street but reserve them for meet ups or shows.

In today's litigious society, your green turn signals could easily make you an at fault party in a traffic accident (ESPECIALLY at night) even though you technically made no driver error. Think about that for a minute please. You did no wrong behind the wheel but your equipment caused confusion to other drivers and resulted in an accident. This could be as simple as a small fender bender to someone freaking out at the sight of flashing green lights and making a maneuver that winds up killing someone. Trust me, you don't wan't to be the one responsible for someone else's life being taken. It's a big burden to shoulder. Ask me how I know.

Please do yourself and the the rest of the people you share the roads with a favor and make a change. After all, your safety and their safety IS dependent not only upon their sound judgment but yours as well.....and in this case, I think yours is a little off.

Its true, it has happened to me. At least someone posts here with some CONSTRUCTIVE criticism rather than just bashing someone because we all know bashing someones idea makes them change their mind...

If they were amber they would be cool.

What I really don't like about them is that a tired, tipsy, old, or what have you driver might see a green light out of the peripheral vision and accidentally move out into an intersection.

I seen a car coming at me with red headlight covers and white fogs at night and I almost had a heart attack. I thought they were driving backwards at 45 MPH!

Here in TX, the only thing with headlights according to TXDOT is that they cannot be Blue or Red. It states nothing about any other color. I have discussed this very issue with 5 police officers and they have actually told me that, not only would the be legal and they wouldn't pull me over for them, but that they actually liked them.

I've reviewed TX vehicular code, and I agree, green is not forbidden......but my previous post remains and I think it foolish to do what you're doing......especially when it comes to your what, 7000+ K. HID fog light replacements?

Sorry buddy. I'm giving you the thumbs down on this one. I don't necessarily believe in or advocate DOT lighting standards, especially since European lighting standards are FAR more reasonable AND stringent with regards to light trespass than US standards are......but your setup is dangerous. I hope you don't kill anyone. Odds are you won't, but that still leaves you in the wrong as far as I'm concerned.
