It's a pretty poorly kept secret, but look for Honda to announce the sedan version of the Civic Si sedan at the Chicago Auto Show on Wed.

I was excited about the Si, UNTIL I've read about how high other manf.s are raising the bar recently in the compact class! These new high compression turbocharged GDI engines (Mazda, VW, Audi, GM, Mitsubishi, Daimler-Chrysler) are going to put Honda to shame if they don't play ball too.

Don't get me wrong... VTEC was a cool development in the 90s, but eeeeveryone has some form of VVT by now, and it looks like these direct injection turbos are getting more power WITH the same fuel economy and emissions. Just look at VWs 2.0t in comparison. Slightly better fuel economy even in a bigger/heavier car like the Jetta, slightly more peak horsepower, but the real kicker is that its making 207ftlbs at 1800rpm. This Si's powerplant is pumping out ~130ftlbs, and never breaks 140ftlbs at any RPM. GM and DC appear to be even more ambitious aiming for a factory delivered 300hp. And when it comes to putting these cars in the hands of tuners... cmon... nuff said. And even outside pure performance, theres more techy gadgets in the competition. The only special thing I see for the Si is a navigation system option. Wheres the technical innovation Honda?

Don't get left behind two generations in a row.

Personally, I think it looks like a slow Honda that they slapped some rims and a wing and some VTECH stickers on. Honda did it right with the '98-'00 SI, esp the blue one. Simply put, how many cars look as great as those did with a set of white rims, lowering springs, and a Greddy angled exhaust? If they still made that version it would still be a money maker today. I know in the part of Florida I'm from there is a huge demand for the coupe SI. They should have stopped making the SI after they discontinued the coupe or kept on making it. For me personally, if it's Honda and it ain't a S2000 or SI coupe, I don't want it.

I like that plus it opens the market for those that need a 4 door.
I do agree with the lack of torque as it seems Honda has relied on technology to wring the most hp out of their 4 cylinder engines but torque was always lacking behind the competition.

I like it a lot.

Well, you know, there is a turbo VTEC motor coming out pretty soon...

Possibly a limited-edition turbo Civic could come about...if the Si proves to be a successful business venture.

I think it is a good move for Civic.. they are mainstreaming the Si line the way the GTI/GLI lines got mainstreamed into the Golf/Jetta lineups...

I think they will get many more people buying the Si this way..

By the same token, however now they need a really unique - limited production turbo car to compete with the upcoming Cobalt SS and MS3....

I see good times coming for compacts..

Get rid of the ugly spoiler and I like it.

However, I'd much rather have the 5-door body in Si trim...
This is more of my feeling. 4 doors sedans are ok but really a 5 door would be more usable. 200bhp is ok, but when there are cars like the WRX/STI/EVO/Old Neon/Caliber that make WAY more power. While refinement maybe another issue I think they need to produce good torque cars not high winding low torque cars.

I'm constantly amazed by my little focus's 130lb-ft torque motor. I just wish it was a little more....

I'll pass and hope maybe ford will.. nevermind, that arguement is dead, and I don't feel like beating a dead horse right now, maybe later.

I'm liking the look. It's amazing how many models honda makes that compete with themselves (between the honda and acura brands). As for that euro hatch, that spoiler really needs to go, then slam it. Need a black one for sure.
