I\'m doing something about it [GR]

I'm doing something about it (Gas Related)

After driving a V!0 powered Class C motor home last weekend and getting 7 mpg I though it best to balance the Karma of the Universe by biking to work.

I've parked the Focus and have ridden my bike to work for the past three days.

It's just over three miles and it only takes me 15 minutes to get there under people power, which is quicker than by car at times.

I get to work and I'm wide and awake to the point that I'm down to a cup of coffee a day instead of my usual pot of coffee.

It's down hill on the way to work. There are two points that I hit 22 mph on a mountain bike just on the glide.

This also helps to keep me from getting too sweaty on the way in.

The way home is tough as it is up hill almost all the way (some hills I've never noticed before biking them.

I think I'm going to put a sign on my back that says "I'm doing something about it, are you?"

I wish I could bike to work, but Its just too hilly, and I work too far away (by local roads) to bike

To get to work on the highway it is like a 15 minute drive,

To take side roads it takes about a hour

To bike would take me several hours, and I think I would be ready to pass out if I made it. As an alternative I’m looking into a motorcycle. Better on gas than a car, but still manageable to get to work.

The other option I didn’t look into yet really is a combination of biking and bus. All the busses in this area have bike racks, and there is no extra charge to use them, so that might be another option for getting around.

Nice job.

Ever since visiting and working in Germany, I've wanted to be able to ride my bike to work. I was truly amazed at how many people chose to ride bicycles and/or motorcycles to work in just about any type of weather. But there's two problems for me: 1) The roads on my way to work are simply not safe. One of them is a 55mph 'backroad' with zero berm. Cars around here do not understand the share the road concept. 2) I lost my bike (nice Trek Hybrid) to an ex.

But good job on the decision. Now, all you need to do is get yourself some decent fowl weather riding gear and you're all set. Does your work have a decent place to stash/park the bike?

I ride right in the door and up the elevator and park it next to my office with no complaints.

Yesterday the elevator was packed so I slung the bike on my sholder and climbed four flights of stairs.

I don't think I'm going to be making a habit of porting the bike

There are other alternatives:

People really need to take a stand so that we can change the balance of power....
And I believe biodiesel has about twice the BTU of ethanol.

I saw a guy the other day with a printed sheet of paper hung in his back window that said "Driving slow to save gas."
A few months ago a blue VW blew by me with a sign in his window:

"Powered by Biodiesel. No need for war!"

Job well done there!

Hopefully more people do this. And not just because gas prices are up either. It simply is a healthier way of living and better for the environment.

On a side not, I purchased a 4 ft skateboard 4 months ago and I've been using that to get around town ever since.

Awesome, I've ridden to work a few times since the big jump. I have a 13 mile ride and it takes about 1 hour on my mountain bike (with 2.3 knobbies). It's a workout, but it's nice cuz we have a shower at work.

Hmm, what time do you head to work in the morning? I’m tempted to run you off the road yelling, “out of my way, hippie!”

With that short a commute, you ought to have an electric Focus. Even at our latitude, I bet you could recharge it plenty with a small solar cell during the workday. If I win the lottery, I’ll custom-build an electric Focus just for the fun of it.

I wish I could bike to work, but living 20 miles away from it makes it unpossible. It's my main rason why I want to get a closer job cause I hate driving 45 minutes in stop and go traffic.
