improving fuel economy

i was told by an old timer who's familiar with the new technology that the best way to imporve the fuel economy of the car or any car for that matter is to replace the airbox with a cone filter, install headers and increase the diameter of the exhaust line for maximum freeflow. he said make sure the sensors are connected so it wouldn't throw the computer out of whack. i was also told by this man that if you are using the car for a daily driver, it's a complete waste of money to modify the engine, clutch and so forth. this guy is in his late 60's now. he was drag racing plymouth's and dodge during their heyday.but he can still fix cars. any rebuttals? let's hear it!

there can be significant gains in mpg with a re-tune of the ecu, properly tuned the engine could also benefit from additional mods and intakes and exhaust are plug and play with good improvements all around if you keep you foot off the gas. also with the cone style filters you need to make sure to keep it clean and oiled if so required or the maf sensor can get dirty and throw the mpg out the window.

It depends on what you mean by "worth it". The reason most of us are here is to tinker on our cars, so in that case, stuff gets upgraded because we can, not because we need it. So in that sense, yeah, its worth it. Nothing you ever do to a car is worth it, unless you're getting paid to go faster...:dunno:

Any mods that you make to a car to improve gas mileage will never pay for themselves in gas savings, but you can have a fun car and still get better gas mileage with it. That's what makes it worth it to me.

IMO, basic bolt-ons are the most fun (as far as installation goes) and more than sufficient for a person who daily drives their car.

Everyone who has posted replies is right...It’s nearly impossible to add performance parts without engaging in some performance driving, because it’s so much more fun, because of that you will most lightly get worst mpg with mods. If you’re really not interested in better speed performance, then just save your money & spend it on very good general maintenance. And if you are interested in better speed performance then you just need to bite the bullet + even if you do some fun driving with mods, your mpg isn’t going take a nose dive & IMO it is well worth it, can’t put a price tag on adding some fun to a generally mundane daily necessity.

They better you can make your car breath the better the gas mileage will be. The only problem with this equation is that most of the time this also makes the car faster, or at least more responsive. This in turn makes you push the car more, and more often therefore resulting in no so good mileage again. But the "Smileage" does increase!:D So in short if you want to get good gas mileage with mods take it easy with the right foot and keep that tach below 3k. If anyone disagrees please feel free to chime in.

UDP, Focus Sport cat-back w/flex pipe, and K&N fiter w/cold air hack (replacing resonator) not only makes more HP, easier passing and more fun, but took the milage from 27.2 (my combined milage split) to 28.8. I expect more with from one of my programs after I get a FS/SCT chip.

I'm around 31ish with a full exhaust and a tune, but used to get 33 consistently. I think once I get an alignment it should go back up a few MPG, its pretty bad right now.

I think one of the biggest things to me is that the gas mileage didn't really drop as I did more modifications to the car, which is a plus to me.
