Jiffy Lube just FUBARed my GF\'s car

I have another oil change horror story for all you guys.

A month and a half ago my girlfriend goes to Jiffy Lube to get the oil changed in her 88 Accord. A week later she brings it back and tells them it is leaking oil. They tell her the threads on the drain plug are bad and it apparently messed up the threads on the oil pan. They tell her they put in a longer drain plug and say that it is only a temporary fix but it should get her to the next oil change. Middle of last week her oil light comes on and Monday afternoon while she is on her way to work the car starts making horrible clicking sounds and then just dies. I go to pick her up after work and her battery is dead (completely unrelated I think) and doesn't want to be jumped so I go get a new battery. I start the car up and this sound coming from the engine bay is just horrible. I shut off the car and check the oil. Dipstick has nothing on it. I think great, the engine is dead (I know this because I have seen and heard first-hand what happens when a car runs with no oil). I put three quarts of oil in so we could drive it home. Yesterday we brought it to a mechanic and when he called me back he said the engine is dead and Jiffy Lube put in the WRONG DRAIN PLUG . He said they put it on the lift and could see a steady drip of oil s they promptly put it right back down onto the ground.

Saturday morning I am planning to go to Jiffy Lube with a private party value from KBB, a report form the mechanic that says the wrong drain plug is there, and hopefully an estimate from another mechanic for the cost to replace the engine. I will talk to the manager (I know he is there at 8am) and see what they are going ot do to make this right. hopefully we won't have to take anything to court but I will if they make me.

You guys have any more advice or other info I should take with me tomorrow?

If that doesnt work write a letter to corporate Jiffy Lube, explaining the situation, and give copies of your recipts, and the mechanics report, the CC your lawyer.

be calm!!!!!!!! just remember to control the anrgy. dont raise your voice dont use bad words. just tell him the problem and ask him how he is going to fix it. If you are not getting any where with him just tell ok. I will now be going to see a lawyer and we can let them staighten it out, then thank him for his time and leave!

Does nothing for the pocketbook, though. Remember, the best justice is financially tangible...

Don't just threaten him with a lawyer, threaten him with a call to your local news channel's trouble shooter.

Most places like this are franchised and not corporately owned.

Believe me, the owner of this store will gladly buy a new motor vs losing his business.

Get all your documents in order and go see the manager, but instead of talking to him in detail ask to see HIS boss, go all the way up to the owner of the store. Then get your justice done.

I knew of a guy that went to WalMart to get his oil changed and on the way home discovered that they took the old oil out, but never put any new oil in.

Re: Jiffy Lube just FUBARed my GF\'s car **UPDATED**

Ok so I talked to the manager of the place and he was really cool abuout it. It was Saturday so he said that for obvious reasons there was nothing he could do right then and there. He gave me his card and said he would talk to his District Manager on Monday and most likely they will want to get the car to an independant mechanic to see if the diagnosis was right.

It is Tuesday now and nothing yet. If by the end of the day tomorrow I have not heard from anybody, I will call the location manager and see whats up. Maybe he will give me the name and ph # of the District Manager so I can get this moving along.

Or you could give this number a shot: Jiffy Lube - Customer Service (800) 344-6933. Just a thought.

I think this will be saved for a later date.

Re: Jiffy Lube just FUBARed my GF\'s car **UPDATED**

****UPDATE****

Yesterday I talked to the manager at the Jiffy Lube and he wanted me to bring it back to his shop so his people could review their own work. I told him no and said i would be glad to take it to another mechanic and told him he could be there to to look at it.

I told him I had set up an appointment at a second shop and he should be at the shop at 8am. I brought it to this second mechanic this morning and the JL manager never showed up. Sure enough when they put it up on the lift there is this bright shiny new drain plug and a steady drip, drip, drip. Probably 1 drop every 4-5 seconds. I got under the lift with the new mechanic and he said the new plug wasn't sealing so the oil just slowly drained out.

I will be calling Jiffy Lube later today and demanding action. If it comes to it I will threaten lawyers, media, and BBB.

Needless to say all my future trips to get the oil changed will be to a dealer or a non Jiffy Lube type place.

FWIW, BlueZig (a midwest jetter) is GM of a Valvoline Instant Oil Change, and I've had his staff and one other valvoline do my oil change before. My parents ALWAYS use Valvoline Instant Oil Change if I am not available to do their oil for them. Never had any bad luck, and I haven't seen a Valvoline yet without competent and knowledgeable crew.

The only reason I don't use them all the time is because for the price, I can't beat doing my own oil changes. Besides, it's the only time I get to inspect the underside (suspension, oil pan, exhaust, gas tank, heat shields, etc) of my car.

I've had 5 oil changes done there on my Escort. On the ZX3, they replaced my tranny fluid with synthetic. BlueZig also helped me install my ZX3's new fuel filter (I was in dressy clothes and needed it done ASAP) but I had to buy the filter.

My only probelm is I currently live in an apartment that will not allow auto work. If I had a place to do it, I would.
