Hopefully the focus looks a little more buff than the mazda3. Mazda3 has chic car look.
You're apparently in the minority. The reactions I get from my Mazda3 (4-door sedan) are nothing short of amazing. I still, more than two years later, get regular, enthusiastic praise for the styling of my 3 from total strangers, all of them men. I've never experienced anything like this from any of the other cars I've owned. The Mazda3 (sedan, at least) is clearly a winner from a styling standpoint, and that carries over to the interior.

Now having said all that, I'm still excited to see the new Focus as NAIAS.

What is wrong with Ford? Sometimes I wonder if they should keep the US Designers employed. They really need to look at one of Europes Best Selling Hatchback and try to bring that to the US......Uhh!.....The New European Ford Focus.

IMO the speed3 has the muscular look. Not saying 3's are not attractive but 9/10 times i see a 3 it has a girl driving. Nothing wrong with that.
I'm afraid I'm not a big fan of the 5-door styling. But the 4-door sedan with the sport appearance package options looks fantastic. I think the base, 2.0L versions can look a bit girly, but I still find them to be far more attractive than the 5-door, including the new Mazdaspeed3.

Maybe the euro focus would be too expensive if sold here. Mostly ford has messed up our version by waiting too long to update it. They wait too long and fall behind on technology with all their vehicles. Examples....taurus, RANGER(way past due), crown vic, and so on. Mostly the stat whores care that our chassis is not the updated version the 3 and s40 are using.

I don't think it's a cost issue of bringing the new Euro Focus to the States. The chassis and some motors are already present in the US. R&D has already been done. They can recoup the cost of the R&D across multiple international markets vs. redesigning a vehicle only for 1 specific country (ie.US model being different than all the rest.) There are many more factors that go into building/designing any product that I know I am not covering, but I could go on forever.
I think they are trying to do an brand image to keep most of their vehicles looking the same, Public Familiarity/Brand Familiarity.

Lastly Consider the difference of cost between the Base Mazda 3 ($14,390) and the current 07 Focus($14,075 -minus rebates and such) I don't think it's a cost issue. Half of the car is already in production here in the US.

A lot of it is the crash and safty standards that our goverment has for the cars sold in the US. The euro cars do not have to pass the same tests.

Not true, the Euro Focus crashes better than ours, why would a safer car be a hurdle?

It's still just a improved C170, sold here as the Mazda 3, Volvo S40, and soon Volvo C30. So there is no reason the Euro Focus couldn't be sold here as is when it essentially already is under Mazda and Volvo. Ford just screwed up thinking people wanted a cheapo small car.

Americans do want cheapo small cars. We are entheusists are a very small demographic and do not shadow the general public. Also the bumper laws are different here in the us and would need to be changed.
