I use GM synchromesh in mine. Joe smoe can buy it at any GM dealer for about $6 quart.

Be careful which Synchromesh you use. There are sevral types, for various aplications. Expect to pay $12-15 for the correct fluid, depending on the dealership. It's sill cheaper than the Ford MTX specific fluid though.

 

Torco RTF is good too, but about twice as much.

I dont know about any of you guys but i use the FORD XT-M5-QS This stuff works excellent! Shifting is much improved

has this newer snythetic from ford helped to get rid of that crappy mtx75 sound at low rpm where it kinda sounds like what i can only really describe as like a 'dragons breath sound'(yeah i have no idea how to describe that sound but im sure many know what im talkin about here)???

 

if its a chatter then i have the same thing with the syncomesh. im still debating on changing it to the new ford fluid.

 

yeah its pretty much a kind of chatter.

 

I have played with just about every kind of MTF on the market and have yet to find anything to completly cure this problem. Howeverm the synchromesh IMO has done the best so far.

For those who don't like the idea of running GM spec fluid, we have used this fluid for over 10 years now when installing Tremec (OE supplier to Ford) TR-3550/4250 performance transmissions in Mustangs. When the Focus started exhibiting the same synchro problems we encountered in the Mustangs equipped with Tremecs (prior to using Synchromesh fluid), this fluid became an excellent option. I have since tested the Ford synthetic fluid, and found the Synchromesh my preference.

i've used the Ford synthetic in mine and it has worked great. DjKurruption used Royal purple synchromax and said it is excellent. I think i'm gonna try that next, Royal Purple makes great products. Its about 6 or 7$ a quart.

 

I'm using AmsOil Series 2000 75W-90 in mine. No noise, no shift issues, no perceived signs of wear. And I like the hot blue color, too!

GM# 12345349 this is the regular old synchromesh. Not the friction modified (intended for vettes) List on it is about $9 but dealer cost is only about $3.50 so they should sell it to you for about $6-$8 quart, depending on the mood of the parts man.

2 Quarts of Mobil 1 Syn ATF and 1/2 bottle of Ford Friction Modifier (I used this back in my Contour Days) it makes a nice smooth shift. Pep Boys has the ATF for 6 bucks a quart and the Friction Modifier should be between 3-4 bucks for a 4oz bottle.

Hey, thanks for the link. Made my fluid change a snap. I stuck with the Ford recommended fluid. Got it for $12 something a quart at the parts counter. Used just a hair over 2 quarts. I know every $ counts but I just can't see skimping on tranny fluid when you change it so infrequently. It's not like you're changing it every 5k miles.

Edit: And by the way, I did change it hot. Oil always seems to drain better when hot. And when hot, it should be nice and mixed up to help take out any particles with it. Really wasn't difficult to change hot at all.
