Sand the stuff you want to paint with some 400 grit. Wipe clean with tack-cloth. Spray with 4 or 5 light coats of black primer. Let primer dry. Wipe with tack-cloth again. Spray with 4-5 light coats of desired color.

That should hold up pretty well, your only real option for permanent durability would be to get some custom aluminum parts made for you, kinda spendy though.

I am about to get this Momo Race Air Leather shift knob but I noticed that the bottom of the knob is silver... the rest of my shifter and reverse lockout is black and I fear it will look bad and bug me everytime I see it

How might I go about painting the rest of the shifter to look like the knob bottom? I have a 2002 or I'd get a short shifter as well.

You might try the Cougar reverse lock-out piece. It's in silver aluminum. That's what I did on my Contour when I changed the shift knob.

The only problem was that the assembly on the Cougar was shorter than mine, so I had to cut the shift rod and retread it (low-tech short-throw shifter). Don't know if this would be necessary on the Focus...

I believe there was somebody who got the Cougar knob and painted his lock-out silver. If you see this thread please post the paints you used:)

btw...I will get a short shifter as soon as its available for 2002!!

I got my car in early July so I am fairly sure it was made after April... never checked but it is a Mach which originated after April anyway.

Any news on when a company will have the new short shifter for the 2002?
