Well, as I stated in my intro (in the newbie section) I'm not the owner of this 2002 base Focus (4 cyl, 5 spd), my daughter is. But that makes me the maintainer (she has no money... sigh). So anyway, she says that the dealer tells her the PCV valve is bad and needs replacement. A little research indicates that I have to remove the intake plenum in order to reach the PCV valve. Ouch. Is there no other way?

Yea, the part I think is what? 2-3 bux, and it pulls out from the front, pop new one in, and pop the tube back on the nipple. How much did the dealership want to charge for it?

The dealer said the PCV valve went "bad"? Really, I can't remember ever seeing one actually go bad. They can get gummed up, but then you just clean them.

However, they may have been referring to the hose collapsing or leaking (see hEaT's post).

I'm with Danny_C on this one. I don't really think that PCVs go bad. IACVs do on the other hand, and they are located underneath of the intake manifold. However, they aren't so difficult to reach with an 8mm ratching wrench from underneath the car.

^A PCV actually gooing shut to the point where simply cleaning it is not an option, seems to me like a symptom of a problem with either tune, fit, or oil.

Well this is the base SE with single overhead cam engine. Is that the Duratec? If so then maybe this thread should be moved to Duratec, sorry. The mechanic said either a bad PCV valve or a bad hose... In either case I can't find the PCV valve anywhere. It's not on the front of the engine under the catalytic convertor. Nothing there but engine block. I can't find it under the thermostat housing... nothing but engine block and transmission.
Any help appreciated! Photos or diagrams especially appreciated. The vacuum diagram under the hood is worthless. It shows the vacuum line coming from the "front vac main" and going to the PCV. No further information, like where the front main vacuum line might be etc.

This would be better posted in "SPI" or even "Team" then. I have a Zetec and the PCV is in the middle front right corner of the engine (looking from the front). Don't know where SPI one is.

Try finding the biggest hose (not the brake booster line) going into the IM from the back, then trace it to the PCV valve.
