I shut my car off the other day, popped the hood and it looked like the positive battery cable was melting. I did a quick grab on it and it was obviously hot. Common problem or am I gonna be having problems down the road?

You have a bad connection at the battery clamp probably where the cable is crimped into the clamp
Best and simplest way is to replace the battery cable with an OEM part
Of course, you could just replace the clamp but that IMHO is just a 'McGyver' temporary fix
Replace that positive cable as soon as you can, when they get heated like they it SEVERELY degrades the cable and can lead to hot spotting and the cable starting the car on fire... much bigger of a problem than a head gasket. (Change them out at the same time)
yes, common problem. Left alone it will lead to the alt light coming on and failure to start at times. I've changed many cables. I recomend replacing the whole cable. Just changing the terminal end dosent address the corrosion that is all through the actual wire under the insulation.
Yes you can run bigger cable. My two have been done that way, one now for nearly 10 years. The original cable melted at battery, starter and eventually toward the alternator end. Bigger cable does not overheat at all even with some corrosion on it and the insulation is still quite flexible. The original got hard as a rock.
Cables were replaced today while doing a head gasket
