Reliability & Service - Duratec Vs. Zetec

I realize that the Duratec is still a relatively new motor, but any thoughts on it vs. the Zetec strictly from a reliability and service level standpoint? I'm buying a sedan for my sister, so I'm trying to ignore the performance aspect, difficult as that is for me. Any early teething issues on the 2003's with the Duratec? I'm gravitating towards a 2003 SE at this point, and since I'm in NY, they aren't as scarce with the 2.3L as elsewhere in the country.

Any input appreciated...

The Duratec is being built in four countries on three continents. It's manufactured to the closest tolerances possible and precisely assembled by robot.

It's Ford and Mazda's new 'world' engine and will see service in many models in 1.8, 2.0 and some 2.3 displacements.

It has a predicted service life (under the care of the average person; poor fluid change maintenance) of 150,000 miles. As far as servicing this engine at the dealer, it's a plug-and-play. They'll just replace the entire engine while under whatever warranty one might have, if any problems are encountered. But I haven't heard of any yet.

It is a well-designed piece, very light and quite reliable to 220 horsepower with the stock crank, rods and pistons, adccording to Mountune U.K. who builds motorsports versions for customers.

Walter Marcy of Marcy Motorsports is a big advocate of this engine as well. A conversation with him will delight a performance enthusiast.

As far as '05 model year availability, as far as I know, the 2.3 wil only be offered in the top level Focus ST Sedan.
All other '05 models ahould be equipped with the 2.0 version Dutratec, which has a slighlty shorter deck height than the 2.3.
Cyl heads are interchangeable, and all performance parts available for the 2.3 should work on the 2.0.

I have an April '03 build 2.3 ZX3 with 26,000 on the clock and it has been virtually perfect, except for a noisy serpentine belt tensioner pully which was replaced under warranty at no charge at 6000 miles.

The engine has incredible torque for a SULEV four cylinder; I'm quite pleased with it's day-to-day performance and I come from a 347 inch 302 V8 that had 420 lb/ft of torque.

July 03' w/ 42k on mine, no problems besides a slight leak in a power steering pump seal or gasket, fixed same day under warranty.

side note: I drive it really hard. 75% of the time, the other 25% I'm either in traffic or at a stop light

i dont think many people have had problems with the actual engine, i know all mine have been tranny related
What type of problems? Auto or 5-speed? Isn't the Duratec spec tranny "beefier" than the Zetec one?

clutch at 300 miles, bad clutch
synchros at 1000 or so (3rd gear)
everything is fine now at 5500 and i dont baby it all the time

I've had electrical issues with mine (TPS, CAS, and Fan relay) but beyond that it's been pretty good. There's an "unfixable" creak from the front end (i think its a motor mount) but the dealer claims it's fine. My sychros dont work right near rev limit around 6500 or so...never have though

I think I just need some better fluid in there and they'll be happier. They're just a little sluggish right now.

I would point out that the MTX-75 on the Duratec is stronger than the Zetec version. However, it also has to deal with much more torque.

Same with the automatic trans; in a PZEV sales brochure insert to the '03 Focus, Ford claims to have 'beefed' the auto for the considerable torque increase...

The electronic shift map is awesome; where shift points are relative to revs and throttle position.

Still wish I had a man trans, though.

43k on my '03 ZX3 PZEV and not a major problem yet and believe you me I am not easy on my car. My car has been heavily auto-x'd by Omnifocus and myself and participated in a Focus Challenge event in Arizona. On top of that I don't exactly baby the car day to day.

For comparison my SVT was a bundle of small problems. Although it was never to the point where I could lemon the car, I am pretty sure I have experienced just about every small problem possible with an SVT.

2003 2.3L from NY, 25k miles, no problems. Manual trans. and driven hard daily. Drove 2500 miles to move from NY to Las Vegas and the car was perfect the whole way.

AAAAAAAAAAAA PZEV
there is a very easy way to get rid of the rear drum noise you are talking about
20,000 miles and my only problem is my noisy rear drums.
take a can of WD-40 and spray a SMALL amount ONLY A SMALL amount on the shoes and bam the noise is gone and the breaks work just like new
i have had no problems with my 03 2.3 PZEV...will i did have the TBS for the cold start thing and my tranny blot got loose some how and they had to tigten it ooooo and my trunk wouldn't close but thats not the engine soooo Duratec

Umm...I think I will pass on the WD-40 idea. from what I have heard the noise is actualy the shoes rubbing against the back plate of the drum.

Could someone please clarify this? Is he suggesting that we spray a high-performance lubricant on the friction surface of our rear brakes?

Also, drum brakes don't have pads.
