Not sure on low cost, I've always went with what I like (MOMO), if it requires a little more saving, then so be it. Not much for compromise here.....

 

You could always remove the reverse lockout sleeve, that would broaden your choices. I removed mine in my 2002 ZX3, never had a problem. I never hit reverse when shifting down to fourth.

 

True. The 5th is so far from the 4th I don't think there's any chance of getting reverse instead of 4th lol.
So now, how exactly do you remove the lockout sleeve?

 

Maybe someone else can chime in here as it's been a while for me and my few Focus doesn't have that reverse lockout. But I think you can just take off the shift boot by squeezing the sides and pulling it out, then you can sorta see how the lockout works. I want to say the sleeve just slides off of the shifter. The shift boot is attached to the lockout so you can just clip the zip tie that holds it on and then zip tie it around the shift lever.

 

The lockout will not just slide off, or at least it didn't on my '04. The ball joint that attaches the shift cable is in the way. You need to take a Dremel tool or something and cut the lower part in half. Then the collar itself will slide off the top.

 

00's have a diferent style shifter than 04's

there is an internal reverse lock out in the transmission, so you no matter how hard you try you will never shift into reverse from 5th

steeda makes nice shift knobs

 

I like the 05 ST shift knobs. Or the Cougar shift knob. which is the same thing as the ST knob, only with black thread. Really nice knobs. Or the RS knob will also work. All under 50$ as well from Steve at Tousley Ford.

 

I've been rolling for over a year without reverse lockout.... can't say throwing it into reverse has ever been an issue... or even a worry. you'd have to be a dumbass who's going for 6th... and SLAM it into 6th,

 

I took it off for like a week. I did'nt have a problem with it. But I just put it back on since the shift knob I wanted already had the reverse lockout feature with it. That, and gives me something to do while I'm sitting at a light, sit there and play with the collar of the reverse lockout. LOL I can't sit in one spot for too long, or I start to fidgit with stuff.
