Slave cylinder replacement

Recently I noticed some fluid pooling a bit on the mat underneath the clutch pedal. Then the pedal cover began slipping off because of the fluid getting under it.

Since there were only two obvious problems (either master or slave cylinder) I took it back to the dealer I bought it from which happens to be a Saturn dealership. Anyway, they quoted me about $380 to fix it while the Ford dealer down the street quoted $290 (best price I've found so far, ugh), parts and labor included on both.

Obviously I'll go with the cheaper place, but I was just curious as to what the normal price range for a slave cylinder replacement runs.

Also, is there anything else I should have them check? Things like clutch wear, uneven brake wearing, etc.?

Appreciate any advice!

Hmm, those prices seem a little high, but that's just off the top of my head. Replacing the clutch master cylinder looks pretty straightforward to me - I've never done it, but I imagine the hardest part is keeping fluid from running all over the carpet.

Be thankful that it's your master cylinder that's failing, rather than the slave cylinder. The slave cylinder can only be accessed with the tranny removed, so that would be a costly repair.

There won't be much for the shop to check out. They'll install a new master cylinder and bleed the clutch. It's possible that they'll do a crappy job with the clutch bleeding, so be sure to check the clutch's operation when you pick up the car. If it's difficult to select gears, or if you get some grinding or clunky shifts, it's possible that the clutch needs to be re-bled. If that happens, take the car back to the shop and tell them to fix it. Don't just "put up" with crappy shifting - it won't get any better with time.

Aside from that, you should be fine.
