Starter & Clutch Safety Swith - 2003 SVT Ford Focus

My 03 SVT Focus started having starting issues about 3 weeks ago. I would turn the key and the car would not start, but the lights and gauges seemed to all functions as normal. The issue was intermittent and when it did happen, I could push the car & pop the clutch to get it started. Also, tapping on the starter I could get it started.

So I assumed it was just a bad starter. After seeing how difficult it would be (for me, at least - I'm not experience working on cars at all) to replace the starter on the SVT, I decided to take it to a local auto repair shop I've used before. They normally charge $65 labor to replace a starter, but they charged me $250 labor because it was "a lot more work" to replace on the SVT. They charged about $180 for a new-rebuilt starter (I think they said they get their parts from O'Reilly). Total charge w/ tax and all was $468.13. Seemed expensive, but my car was working again so I was happy.

Everything worked fine for almost a week, but then the same symptoms started occurring again. So I have a friend push me & I pop the clutch to get it started. I take it back to the mechanics & tell them what's up. They keep it for a day & told me that they had no problem starting the car throughout the day and they found a "possible" connection issue somewhere. They give it back to me no charge.

Everything works fine for almost another week, and then I start having some issues again. On occasion it would take 3 or 4 turns of the key before the car would start, so I was planning to take it back to the mechanics again to see what was up. When I get in my car later to take it back to the auto shop, I could not get it to start at all. Everything seemed to light up and turn on fine, but the car wouldn't crank. Great, so I'm thinking something is going on with the starter again. However, this time I was unable to get it started by being pushed & popping the clutch or tapping on the starter. I just couldn't get it started for anything. So I had it towed to the auto shop.

They said obviously something is going on that we're missing and that there might be something else "wrong" somewhere. I call them when I get off work & they say they finally solved the mystery and that my car was ready. They said a switch had gone bad & that they decided it was best to just bypass it completely. They said it was a safety feature & wanted to be clear in letting me know that they bypassed it. The receipt said "traced circuit problem to clutch switch", or something along those lines. Anyhow, they charged me $65 for towing across town and $58 for labor... total of $134.38 with tax. They said they were confident that everything would working fine now. I haven't had any problems starting the car since, but it's only been a few days.

I bought the car used 5 years ago with 30,000 miles on it from a Ford dealership. Shortly after I bought it the dealership replaced the starter in it because I told them about an intermittent issue where the car would make a horrible grinding sound when I'd try to crank it sometimes (but I could always eventually get it started). Everything worked fine for 5 years until these most recent events. Well, actually I did have to have the ignition coil replaced 2 or 3 years ago. Also, these mechanics replaced the alternator before too -- which was also crazy expensive due to the alternator also being in a "hard to access" location. I digress, - all of that is just some more history about my car.

Anyways, just wanted to share this experience and see what everyone's thoughts are. Anyone had any experiences like this before?
Could it have been the clutch safety switch all along, & I wasted a lot of money having the starter replaced? And if that were the case - why would popping the clutch & tapping the starter work the first time around, but later on not work at all?
Should I be concerned about the safety switch they bypassed?
Do the amounts the mechanics charged me seem reasonable?

Thanks for reading!

One: Find another shop. They are gouging you simply because "It's an SVT." The alt and starter aren't any more or less accessible than on any other car.

Sounds like your car is getting flooded on occasion. If it doesn't fire after one try, floor the gas pedal all the way to the carpet and try starting again. That will trigger the fuel cut-out and should start.

Hopefully that helps. Sounds like you've got some other issues. I'd find a different shop, and get your timing done. If it's original it needs done ASAP.

My SVT has the occasional horrible grind on start as well. Replacing the clutch switch made no difference on my car. I have a new starter, but haven't had a chance/location to replace it yet.

Something to check is if the ECU changes the tune at all if the clutch is in. Since they bypassed the switch, as far as the ECU is concerned, the clutch is always depressed.

I don't think the problem is a no-start. Seems like its a momentary break in the power to the starter. It's the same grinding you might hear if you tried to start the car twice in short succession. Or turned the key while the car is running. Might be something in the ignition or starter relay?

im having same issue with my SVT. ive tested all the relays in the system. crazy part is...

im getting power to the start 12v always hot and 10volts to the grey wire which is the wire to the starter. i get power at both spots for the start but the starter doesnt work sometimes...but the starter will jump with a screwdriver and it passed 3 bench tests....

basiclly the car is telling the starter to crank and the start isnt doing it. but it will jump with a screwdriver...

and this is the 3rd starter in the car.

i did a voltage drop down test and there was zero drop down on any of the 2 power cables and the ground cable....

and i retested the grey wire and i get 12v now. at both terminals on the harness at the starter.

Advanced auto wouldnt take the starter back because it would "pass" their bench tester still but the starter was making weird noises and the soilinoid was hot to the touch last night when i was testing things. you could feel the soilinoid click with your hands on the body of it but the starter wouldnt do anything.

after testing the whole wired system and it passing it textbook step by step with a multimeter and the starter getting hot to the touch and making noises im certin its the starter and not the car. this would have been the SECOND starter on warrenty from advanced technically if they had given me the new starter today it would be the THIRD STARTER from them in the car....prolly cuz they use cheap ass parts....

It's absolutely great to hear you did a voltage drop test (it's about the best electrical test available but also the least used and understood). But I can't really blame Advance Auto either since even you appear to have proven there may not be anything wrong with the starter since "...the starter will jump with a screwdriver and it passed 3 bench tests..."

Please don't take this wrong since I'm not familiar with your level of electrical expertise, but are you certain you're performing the voltage drop test correctly? Getting zero voltage drop always makes me wonder since you'll typically see at least a couple of tenths drop on even the best of circuits.

But jumping the starter with a screw driver you're supplying a HUGE voltage spike, that may not be provided by wiring, and doesn't mean the solenoid isn't toast on the starter. Your basically bypassing the Solenoid and providing a direct path for current to flow. (If I have to use a screw driver, I usually call the solenoid bad and replace the starter.)

Also, even in a perfect world, sometimes things that SHOULD work, don't.

it was the starter. bought a new one from autozone and it cranked right up.

i tried. because the starter would "pass" their bench test they wont take it back. they pretty much scammed me 150$....

well not really sure whats up cuz the wiring passes...lol
