My 03 SVT Focus started having starting issues about 3 weeks ago. I would turn the key and the car would not start, but the lights and gauges seemed to all functions as normal. The issue was intermittent and when it did happen, I could push the car & pop the clutch to get it started. Also, tapping on the starter I could get it started.
So I assumed it was just a bad starter. After seeing how difficult it would be (for me, at least - I'm not experience working on cars at all) to replace the starter on the SVT, I decided to take it to a local auto repair shop I've used before. They normally charge $65 labor to replace a starter, but they charged me $250 labor because it was "a lot more work" to replace on the SVT. They charged about $180 for a new-rebuilt starter (I think they said they get their parts from O'Reilly). Total charge w/ tax and all was $468.13. Seemed expensive, but my car was working again so I was happy.
Everything worked fine for almost a week, but then the same symptoms started occurring again. So I have a friend push me & I pop the clutch to get it started. I take it back to the mechanics & tell them what's up. They keep it for a day & told me that they had no problem starting the car throughout the day and they found a "possible" connection issue somewhere. They give it back to me no charge.
Everything works fine for almost another week, and then I start having some issues again. On occasion it would take 3 or 4 turns of the key before the car would start, so I was planning to take it back to the mechanics again to see what was up. When I get in my car later to take it back to the auto shop, I could not get it to start at all. Everything seemed to light up and turn on fine, but the car wouldn't crank. Great, so I'm thinking something is going on with the starter again. However, this time I was unable to get it started by being pushed & popping the clutch or tapping on the starter. I just couldn't get it started for anything. So I had it towed to the auto shop.
They said obviously something is going on that we're missing and that there might be something else "wrong" somewhere. I call them when I get off work & they say they finally solved the mystery and that my car was ready. They said a switch had gone bad & that they decided it was best to just bypass it completely. They said it was a safety feature & wanted to be clear in letting me know that they bypassed it. The receipt said "traced circuit problem to clutch switch", or something along those lines. Anyhow, they charged me $65 for towing across town and $58 for labor... total of $134.38 with tax. They said they were confident that everything would working fine now. I haven't had any problems starting the car since, but it's only been a few days.
I bought the car used 5 years ago with 30,000 miles on it from a Ford dealership. Shortly after I bought it the dealership replaced the starter in it because I told them about an intermittent issue where the car would make a horrible grinding sound when I'd try to crank it sometimes (but I could always eventually get it started). Everything worked fine for 5 years until these most recent events. Well, actually I did have to have the ignition coil replaced 2 or 3 years ago. Also, these mechanics replaced the alternator before too -- which was also crazy expensive due to the alternator also being in a "hard to access" location. I digress, - all of that is just some more history about my car.
Anyways, just wanted to share this experience and see what everyone's thoughts are. Anyone had any experiences like this before?
Could it have been the clutch safety switch all along, & I wasted a lot of money having the starter replaced? And if that were the case - why would popping the clutch & tapping the starter work the first time around, but later on not work at all?
Should I be concerned about the safety switch they bypassed?
Do the amounts the mechanics charged me seem reasonable?
Thanks for reading!
