Tall Focus owners

Hello all,

I am beginning to search for a new car, and am considering the focus 5-door among some other choices. I have sat in a few at dealers and auto shows, and felt pretty comfortable with room to stretch out (I'm 6'4"). However, sometimes you don't notice minor discomforts until you get a good long drive in. Are any of you owners tall like myself? After owning the car for a while what do you think about comfort? Discover any minor annoyances?

Thanks

If the new Focus is anything like the mk1, you shouldn't have any issues. We have quite a few members that are 6'4" and taller. Ford has been very good about accommodating tall people with all the Focuses. Write down a list of common annoyances that you have found in various cars and go take a long test drive. That should help knock out some items you have found to be a problem that other tall owners may not have found.

For instance - I'm not tall, but I'm built like an oompaloompa - all torso. I have to get my seating position all funky so I have headroom clearance for my helmet on track days and auto-x days. My friend Jim is even worse off than me - I'm 5'10ish with a 30" inseam - Jim is 6'2".

The sunroof makes it a little tight (I'm 6'2"), but I have my seat all the way back. I haven't gone on any really long trips yet, but I commute about 35 miles each way to work and have no big complaints. The tightest spot for me is my right knee and the center console.

I think it's tighter than the Mk1, but it's comparable to a Fusion for room.

I'm 6'2" and all of my height is in my torso (27" inseam on good fitting trousers). I sit beside other people that are close to my height and I sit 8"+ higher than they do and I always have trouble finding a car to "fit" me and not have the seat laying all the way back where I can't reach the steering wheel or have my head hitting the ceiling. I lowered my seat height in my '12 Focus SE Hatchback (little lever on the side) and it fits me great, plenty of clearance for my head and my feet actually touch the pedals without the steering wheel ground into my chest. The actual seat bottom goes down, not just slide back and forth. Easy to get in and out of as well, I usually have trouble with a 4 door car. I am still very impressed with this car. I watch my driving habits and average about 34 mpg in town (reads 33.9mpg average driving), I averaged mid 40s on a shorter trip (70 mile round trip, 45.9mpg through the countryside) that's average, not instant and I have pictures and a passenger witness to prove it. As far as comfort, it rides good, not hard on my lower back like some cars, plenty of power. Seat is comfortable and doesn't put my legs to sleep even after a couple of hours behind the wheel last weekend on a road trip. On the other hand, others (5'5" and small frame) raise the seat up and it fits them fine as well. Another thing that I am impressed with is the night driving and the lighting, your path is very well illuminated. The Running Lights are very noticeable as well and you can choose to drive with them or without, although I do wish they would come on automatically when the headlights do. Good luck with your search, mine kept coming back to the Ford Focus every single time. I haven't regretted it and it just keeps getting better.

I'm 6'3" and I own a 2012 Focus 5-door. I have an 85-mile, one-way commute. I have toyed around with various seat positions. Generally I prefer a taller seating position so that my legs can bend downward like in a normal chair. In the 2012 Focus, the height adjustment also shifts the seat backward and forward in a diagonal motion. So to get the greatest distance from the pedals for leg room, it unfortunately also shifts the seat down lower. I would like it better if it didn't do this, but overall, I still find it to be pretty comfortable, and the seats themselves are excellent. I have the seat fairly high up, and as far back as it will go. I have some sciatic nerve pain in my left leg, which makes things worse toward the end of my commute. This car does *not* have the same leg room as a Fusion (not that you would expect it to). When my 2005 Mazda3 first died, the Fusion was one of the cars I looked at to replace the 3. It was considerably more comfortable up front than any of the cars I've owned (all of which have been smaller cars, because I like driving them).

The center console thing doesn't bother me like it does others. I can never understand why you would want your right leg to go further over to the right than the gas pedal, anyway. I like to rest my knee on that spot in the center console when I'm on cruise control. I do find the front passenger seat to be cramped, even with the seat all the way back, but then again, I never sit there except to wash the dashboard and windshield on that side. For me, if I didn't have this darn sciatic nerve pain going on, the Focus would 100% fine for me, and I have plenty of headroom, even with the moonroof and the seat fairly high up.

6'2" and 175lbs. Overall pretty comfy, an A-. Seat bottom is typically a bit short and also slightly narrow. Side bolsters (leather interior) a bit too rigid and combined with seat narrowness, tend to dig into thigh on the outboard side. Seat backs are exceptionally comfortable. Dead pedal is a bit awkward with a steep angle and is too far back for tall folks when seat is positioned within proper reach of touchscreen.

I think the narrowness of the bottom cushion is part of why I have the sciatic nerve pain in this car. I had it worse in my Mazda3, but it was originally caused by other things a few years ago. It's gotten better since then, but I can feel that left side bolster digging into my upper leg, right where I have the pain. I really don't want to have to play the "old fart" and drive with a pillow on the seat. I did that for a while before the pain got better with some physical therapy, but ditched it when it was not longer as bad.

It's fine if you have a short inseam. I'm built like a monkey, all arms and legs. 6'3" with a 35in inseam. Seat all the way back and my knees will start screaming after 100 miles.

I'm tempted to find some junk focus seats and make modified rails that will let me go back another three inches.
