Toyota's President Akio Toyoda has said the automaker is in desperate need of an excitement injection, and here's the first dose: the Toyota FT-86 Concept.

Inspired by the Corolla-based AE86 sports coupe of the '80s, the FT-86 concept was designed by the automaker's ED2 styling studio in France and bears a remarkable resemblance to the FT-HS concept shown at the Detroit Auto Show several years back.

Since it's a "concept," Toyota hasn't divulged much about the FT-86 yet, but we do know it's powered by a Subaru-derived 2.0-liter boxer four sending power to the rear wheels. Toyota focused on keeping the weight down to improve handling and, according to one source, the platform is unique to the concept. The engine sits lower in the engine bay to aid aerodynamics while keeping the center of gravity in check, and the overall dimensions of Toyota's new 2+2 are 163.78 inches long and 69.29 inches wide, with a wheelbase of 101.18 inches.

After the FT-86 bows in concept form at the Tokyo Motor Show next month, the production model will be shown sometime next year with sales beginning sometime in late 2011 carrying a sticker price somewhere north of $20,000.

2.0L Boxer 4 in what will be a tuners dream? There's nothing saying this won't be a 2.0L turbo.

With the Genesis Coupe rocking a 2.0T from Mitsubishi... I doubt Toyota will be stupid enough to miss the boat on this.

The rivalry between the Evo and STi are too well known for Toyota to bow out and not carry a derivative of the rival engine.

Notice it has a 101 in wheelbase, its gonna be a small car, likely lighter than the Genesis beast

2011 is gonna be a good year to buy a new car!!!

looking at this, eventhough I hate Toyota
CR-Z dont like hybrids

Wow...

There are design queues from a lot of different cars in there (mostly Mazda and Nissan), but I think I can honestly say this car has its own flavor, and is looking really desirable in RWD.

I cant help but think this is going to be a dissapointment as far as power goes. Memories of the last MR2 are still in my mind. I hope they prove me wrong but I say it will be a great handling car but a dissapointment everywhere else. Like the MR2 and Miata it will be popular with teenage girls, mid-life crisis males, and the occasional enthusiast.

Dobber, so you're saying that 200hp in a lightweight mid-engined car that you can't drive in the rain because it will just spin in circles isn't enough?

I think they realize that most enthusiasts are going to use the platform as a starting point. Even if they offer a low-boost turbo package, people will just swap it for a bigger one. Why shouldn't they just give you the platform and let those who want to develop it further?

Well considering my 109hp Ranger spins in circles in the rain I dont really consider that a good benchmark.

How light can you really make a 4 seater?

200hp in a high reving NA 2.0L will mean no low end torgue. I have driven my fair share of those and I dont like them. Now if it does come with a turbo then I will change my statement. But at that price I doubt there will be a turbo.

No one designs high volume production cars strictly for enthusiasts. There is no money in it. Even if TRD throws the whole garage at it I dont see this being that great of a car. Right now this looks comparable to the last MR2 or Celica to me. And it will probably go the way of the last MR2/Celica. They will sell a ton to start, the market will be saturated quickly, and it will fizzle out in 3 years.

This is by far the most exciting thing Toyota has produced in over a decade. I would actually consider this as a car I could be seen in. I normally hate anything Toyota does since they make so many bland, boring cars. Their F1 program and the FT-86 are the only things that they do that interest me. Otherwise, their products are as exciting as a yawn.

I'm not sure on the styling of this; it's really futuristic. Then again it is a 2011 car.

It looks like the most powerful NA EJ20 puts out 190hp according to wikipedia :p

I'll reserve passing verdict until I drive one, but I'm glad Toyota is finally making a sporty car.

Maybe the...'10s...will be the 90s reborn and everyone will make RWD cars again.
All we need is for Nissan to bring the Silvia back, a new Supra, new RX-7, etc. Slim chances of all that happening though...

The "Subaru-derived" part of the engine description has me wondering... will it be an existing Subaru engine (with a deliciously overzealous aftermarket)?

I WILL buy this car if it comes out as they are portraying it.

It's everything one could want.

Small, light, nimble, RWD, and looks nice.

[applause]

Good job Toyota.

Wow, if this thing continues looking as promising as it is right now, I think the Genesis may have competition for my new car in a few years :hump::eek::hump:

And people are still waiting for inflation.

Yes we are in an age where a well equipped focus ses tops $20k easily (btw my '02 ZTS in same trim was $15K)

btw this is an interesting development. I thought this car was dead a year or more ago.:dunno:
