It actually is. The catalyst super-heats when it goes into 'self clean' mode. It super-heats by having the engine dump excess of fuel into the catalyst and then in turn creates a burn in the cat. This is supposed to burn off all the sout and whatnot.

Thats one hell of a software problem!

i think theres more to it than that...
we arent seeing the full problem, and the software patch seems like a crude bandaid.

couldnt something be done with fueling and EGT - instead of a dumb shutdown?

 

They don't shut the truck down. It defuels the truck. Which will stop the burn, but not kill the engine. Just limits the fuel at idle.

ah, thanks for clearing that up... that makes alot more sense.

sounds like it has a dead cylinder or 3... Which would explain the flames, because if the cylinder isn't burning the fuel and it gets dumped into the exhaust raw, and then goes through that new emissions reducing thing they've got, you get flames
