BMW M Coupes

...in two years, I'll be buying a new car. If I get a NEW new car, it will be a Mini Cooper S, and nothing else. Period.

But... my other love in life is the BMW M Coupe. And they are getting old enough that there will be a good amount of examples in the $25,000 range by the time I get a new car. (I'm talking the earlier version, I don't think the 300hp version will be at $25,000 by then).

Check this out:

...so, it has 50,000 miles on it. But I don't think I would care about that... I would keep the Focus as a backup in case the M Coupe is ever in the shop. And you can put a good amount of miles on BMW's, right?

Is there any reason this would NOT be a good idea?

I so badly wanted a '93-'96 318ti or a 325is when looking for my first car. Then my parents said no - you're buying a new car and got me the Focus... And thank god they did

For 25k you can get a 1-2 year old Mustang GT, STI, Evo and all the lot... I just can't understand why people would get a older car just for the name when they can buy a newer car which doesn't fall behind (except the Mustang

) at all performance wise, look wise or comfort wise...

Plus an M Coupe?

I mean I know I'll be purchasing either an M1 or an M3 after I get out of college ( in 5 years
Image
) because I purely love BMW's, but for me the Coupe together w/ the new Bangle-ized models are a total disgrace for BMW

Ha dude your funny.
BMW= Expensive fords.

They start to go to [censored] really fast after they pass 70,000 miles, and by the time you hit 100,000 it’s cheaper to buy a new one than to fix it.

I remember my friend wound up getting an 1986 BMW 5 series from his aunt. The car had less than 100,000 miles on it, it was babied its whole life, and she followed the maintenance to a T. The car after 2 years cost him over $5,000. And remember he was GIVEN the car. Oh and his dad was a mechanic, So most of that was JUST for parts at COST!

So BMW’s are great cars when pretty new, but as the miles go up they start to go to [censored] really fast. And just like a ford the first model year of there cars are always full of bugs, and have lots of recalls.

And this is not unusual, I know several people with BMW’s and once you cross that 70,000 mile mark (regardless of year) they start to get expensive to own.

Before you get all 100% decided, go ahead and see if you can test drive one. A while back when I was posting a thread about next sports car to get, that was in the final runner-ups... Three hatchbacks: M-Coupe w/ red interior, the silver 350Z, and the Corvette. M-Coupe kinda lacks the 'hoo-haaaaa' of the other two, but thats with the somewhat torqueless 240 horsie one though (-140ftlbs=SOP noticable), and not the 300+hp engine from 01+ I think. They have the name and are w/o a doubt ueber pimpy and handle well, but BMW != Reliable. BMW = Performance+luxury... Reliability just happens to not be POOR, but its not supposed to be a never-die Honda either and you pay BMW tax on repairs at shops (exroommate was a BMW tech and two buddies have matching black M3s).

Here's a nice M-Coupe near you right here, looks like its in your price range too. Special 3-layer tinted paint option as well (seen that color in person, looks great).

That is utter [censored]. I own a 86 325. The odo stopped working in 2000 @ 173,000. I bought it, fixed the odo for $4.

Parts are pretty damned cheap. The thing is screwed together amazingly well. timing kit? New belt, tensioner, AND water pump? $85 shipped. Front suspension bits? Control arms, solid bushings, and tie rods? $145 shipped, both sides.

BMWs are great cars. My wifes next car will be E24 or E34, hopefully I will be able to snag an E34 wagon. Since she drives Automatic, I should be able to find something rather easily.

Back to the topic at hand, as Duc said, you never know until you drive it. I think the M-Coupe is probably the best BMW drivers car since the E30.

Personally I'll take E30 or an E36 over an E46 any day
E39 > E60 ...
Well not even going to the Bangle versions
Image

So how many miles does your E30 have now?

I've only had the speed fixed for a few weeks, sitting on 175k. I have a stack of parts to put on it, Bilstein Dampers, Alpina springs, timing belt kit, the rest of the front suspension. Hopefully I can get to everything this week. I love the car. It has the eta engine, so it is low on HP but has gobs of torque for a car the same size-if not smaller, than the Focus.

Fun fact: toddlers love powerslides

My daughter, 1.5yrs old, goes weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee everytime we pull out of our apartment complex.

Every generation of the small BMWs has gotten progressivly less sportier. 2002>E21>E30>E36>E46 I can't say on the E90, as I havn't driven it. However, the styling definatly isn't better than any of the other 3s, except possibly the E21.

The E30, though, is modern enough to be convient every day, and with the small block 6 has enough power to keep everyone happy. Can't wait until I get out of school though, and get the M20 replaced with an M50. Sleeper time!!

As a parent, reading this kind of makes me angry at you for putting your daughter in that kind of danger.
Image
What would you do if you flipped the car or spun out of control with your daughter in the car? I love powersliding as much as everyone else does, but when the kiddos are in the car i'm the guy you are honking at to speed up. Just something for you to think about.

A little tail action when noone is comming while exiting a parking lot is not dangerous.

Never say never. In my experiences, the worst accidents happen within a mile of your house and sometimes you just have no control over who or what is coming out of nowhere. So please just drive safely with your children in the car is all i'm saying. I would hate to see both you and her as another statistic.

^^Yeah But WHAT if!!!!
Flip @ 10-15mph? come on... I will not under any circumstance put my kids in danger.
i dont know what kind of car your doing...but 10-15 miles an hour aint going to get you a litle tail action...and if it does its not gonna be noticeable for a year and half year old. I must be doing something wrong when i take the SVT Lightning out.

You can't get the tail to slide exiting a parking lot @ 90 degrees? Something is definatly wrong with that lightning then.
