Ford Detroit: the Mustang-based Interceptor Concept

Though AutoWeek was chastised for claiming Ford was working on sedan and even wagon variants of the iconic Mustang coupe, the automaker is certainly considering using the Stang's underpinnings for other vehicles. The Interceptor, in Ford's defense, is not so much a four-door Mustang as it is a sedan that's based on the Mustang's chassis. In fact, Ford made an obvious effort to make the Interceptor not look like a four-door Mustang, instead grafting on the front end of the Super Chief truck concept that debuted in Detroit last year. The Interceptor also has a mighty engine to back up its beefy looks, a 5.0-liter version of Ford's 4.6-liter Cammer engine that produces 400 horsepower on E85 ethanol.

The Interceptor, ladies and gentlemen, is Ford's stunner concept for the 2007 North American International Auto Show. Think about it, the Interceptor combines qualities of the two things that Ford does best, the Mustang and trucks, in one tidy, mass-marketable, rear-wheel drive package. It's slab-sided hotness reminds us of the 427 Concept from 2003, but with some extra chunkiness tossed in for good measure. Seriously, though, this car should be built, if not for the fact it's a slick way to profit from the Mustang connection, but also because Ford is going to need a large, rear-wheel drive car that's competitive in the very near future. Sorry Vickie, you just can't hold a candle to the Chrysler 300 or GM's upcoming Zeta-based sedans. The Interceptor looks like it can.

Check out Ford's official press release on the Interceptor after the jump, and click on the pic above to see a high-resolution version for you desktop.

It sorta looks like an Edge, but I also sorta like it for some reason :dunno:

From that angle, this is really what the Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Car should be.

- Crown Vic version would be as shown (now needs to be renamed to an "F" name )

- Grand Marquis would have the usual Mercury waterfall grille

- Town Car would have the Lincoln waterfall grille a la MKZ or MKS or that gawdy square thing that's popping up on the Navigator or MKX.

I kind of like it but ditch that out of place Super Chief truck concept front end and Ford might have a chance to be competitive in that segment.

Way to close to a 300C. :( Its a good idea, but I don't know how well it will fly. Where would they position this in their line up so that it wouldn't impinge on the sales of the 500?

Bring the base of the greenhouse down a bit and give some hips.

Next, change that front grille to something more like the edge, with a more aggressive headlight structure and call it a day.

I think the consenus is right. Too much like a 300 but good enough to be in production.

One thing I thought Ford always did well was show off some great concepts that never get built. Let's hope Mulally finally breaks that mold and builds this thing.

wow that thing is pure Al Capone all sorts of gangster type car nice. i like it too for some reason, that front actually looks good and the rear is nice too but reminds me of a 300 a lil tooo much

Already saw the "Ford Passat" , dont need to see the "Ford 300C". It does look badass, but thats cuz the Rolls Phantom looks badass, and Chryslers "me too" 300 follows the same styling. A 300 looks like a Phantom, until a Phantom rolls up, then a 300 just looks cheap.
Heck yes Ford should use the Mustang platform for the Crown Vic replacement, but we dont need a clone of the competition. Didn't the 'Interceptor' (Falcon) sedan back in the day just look a 72 Stang knocked up a 71 Challenger? Ah well, what do we consumers know.

i personally won't be in line for one... but I'm hardly their target market (neither is 90% of the people on a Ford Focus forum site...) but I would be stoked if ford actually green lighted this. WITHOUT the typical ford waterdown

i think they're showing great promise with the Ford Fairlane, it kept a lot of radical concept cues... but the market is ready for these cars now. Ford did take a little while to warm up to the market... but even 7 years ago.. the market was nowhere near ready for concept-like cars....... and Ford will just always be 5 years behind the market. let's say 2002 was the true turnaround year for radical cars selling in North America... consider Ford caught up and call it a day

make it... sell well... throw taxi signs and cop decals all over it... pull me over in one and call it a day

oh....... and about the Ford 500....... drop it. I totally forgot that terrible car was made until i was reminded about it in this thread. It wasn't needed before... it's less needed that the fusions out and the Taurus has been taken behind the garage and shot and it's certainly not needed now
