Ya know, I'm liking the GTi a whole lot, but the dude in the commercials is ruining it for me because I think I'd rather chase him down with my baseball bat than drive the car

Ya if you could shave some weight off of the GTi I'd say it'd be a much better car :dunno:

but then again, your going to buy a 28thousand dollar car and then pay money to reduce the weight....because it only has 200hp

if i had a choice, i would definitely buy the HondaSi, only because it is the best car for the money.

Next would come the GTI...but it just has wayyy too many luxury features/weight/PRICE for what they are aiming it at.....the *young* tuner crowd.

guess there is an evolution in the tuner crowd?...worse power-weight ratio and more anemities for a bigger price?:dunno:

But couldn't you say that of most any car? I'm sure they didn't sit around their table and say...."You know Franz...this car will be a lot better if we add 400 lbs. of ballast in the trunk."

I'm sure safety features, standard features, options and accesories, and the overall solid feel of the car all contributed to that weight. Sur it's a possibility it could have been 500 lbs. lighter but at the expense of what?

I'm on board with Omni. I would love to own this car, but it would not be my track car, it would be my daily driver and possibly occasionaly double as a back road bomber and I'm sure it would do an exceptional job.

When you try and make a vehicle meet every purpose you end up with a vehicle thats decent at a lot of things but fantastic at nothing.

No, in the JCW kit you can get:

Upgraded SC
Intake
Brakes
Suspension
exhaust
cylinder heads
Wheels
remaped ECU
LSD (comes with the $6300 kit)

The only factory gutted MINI there is, is the JCW GP, which does not come with a back seat.

Hope that helps. I would take the MINI...mainly just because I love them and will soon own one!

22k. ;) I admit, we all use base versus loaded where convenient to fit our agendas.
In this article, if you refer to the last page it shows price as tested. I know we Americans love options, but they went a little overboard there and optioned those two into another class of cars IMO. I wouldn't buy a $30,015 Mini Cooper S nor a $29,405 VW GTI. At that point I could get a new Mustang GT, 350Z, RX-8, EVO, or some such w/ less options. Weight is always a bad thing, but a Chevy Aveo doesn't outperform nor is generally more fun to drive than a Ford GT just because it weighs less (over 1100lbs less). Its one of many factors IMO.

The Mini Cooper S is just long in the tooth, but a new powerplant will breath some life into it and should be far more economical than this route of upgrade. Either way, I'm still actually surprised they liked the Si as much as they did. I mean, what does it really have going for it:
1) Its a Honda (traditionally well built)
2) Its cheap
3) ... its cheap
Sorry Honda, you aren't going to wow me now that the bar has been raised. A torqueless 200hp peak Si would have been a top contender LAST generation (for which they also miserably dropped the ball), but this time around its only saving grace is its pricepoint. BTW, since this is a Focus site, where the hell is a new euro GDI turbo Focus Ford... hmmmm???! :p

between the gti and si i would take the gti, but between all 3, the mini S hands down, i rode in one once, 100mph in no time at all, and we topped out at 140, i hear that is very similar to the svtf
