Hey,
04 SVTF with 50K miles on it. Check engine light came on, brought it to a Ford dealer here in AZ. They told me that the K&N Typhoon SR (P/N 69-3511TR) that i have on the car "damaged" the mass airflow sensor and the car is now running 15% rich, hence the check engine light. I have to wait to get the paperwork in the mail to quote the specific codes. But has anybody came across anything like this after installing a K&N in their car. Sounds kinda fishy to me. I've had the Typhoon in for about 30K miles now.
Any help or info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx.
Kevin

If it has never been oiled except from the factory, I'd say "No".
If YOU cleaned and oiled it, I'd say "Probably".
Cleaning and oiling one is a Delicate process, and it only takes a TINY amount of oil to cover the filter medium once it's had a minute to sit.
Any excess oil can be inhaled by the throttle-body, and as it passes the Mass-Air, it can foul the sensors.
I overoiled my k&n FIPK once...
It took about 12 hours with paper towels and toilet paper to wick all of the excess away. Never install an over-oiled filter.
If the filter has never been serviced, then I call BS by the dealer.
Mass-Air Sensors CAN Fail by themselves, and if there was no excess oil, then the tech is just looking for excuses.
Regardless, it'll be a tough case to argue.
If you've honestly never oiled it, I'd swap out to the stock intake and go to a different dealer.

Thanx for the reply. Because i live in Arizona, with all the heat and dust, i keep an eye on the filter and i have cleaned it and oiled a couple times. And now i feel like a dumbass cause i didn't even think about that.
Good call!

Junkyard is another Possible option if the part is cheap enough to take a chance on.
:)

From what I recall when my MAF went, it was a hefty bill. I would try and see what our dealer sponsors here, like FORDSVTPARTS and TeamFordParts have to offer for a new MAF.

Personally, I'm a bit wary of getting used electrical sensors and such. But if your pocketbook is dictating the call, then a good, reputable auto recycler/wrecker is a good option.

Thanx for the reply. So how's TO these days? I'm originally from Burlington, now living in Arizona. I will check those 2 sites and compare it with the local dealers. Not buying the MAF from a wrecking yard. Might end up in worse shape then i am now.
Thanx again for the reply, greatly appreciated.

hey Kevin you might want to drop cruzininmyfocus a pm he works for five star ford here in phoenix and he hooks all of us dezert rats up

also did you take the car to Earnhardt's??? it sounds like something they would do. blaming aftermarket parts.

How did you guess it went to Earnhardt's? Thanx for suggesting cruz, i will give him a shout. Is there any where in the valley has the slightest clue what they are doing when it comes to the SVT's????

deductive reasoning. I saw chandler AZ and thought of all the dealerships that treat people like crap in the area.:lol:

I know the guys at five star just rebuilt a powerworks supercharged svt for one of our fellow dezert jetters. so they have a pretty good idea of what is going on.

also you may want to check out the dezert forums here on the jet. there are a lot of us local who know how to fix just about anything with these cars.

Yep, haven't had much luck with dealers, or with the SVTF for that matter. Bought in Feb. of 04. In the first 20K miles, had the engine rebuilt, tranny changed twice and 3 clutches! Next time i need service i will definetely check out 5 Star. After all that i purchased the Premium Care extended warranty so she's covered b2b up to 100K miles or Feb. 09.
Appreciated the reply and the info!

wow that sounds just like my track record with foci. my first had two engines, 3 transmissions 2 clutchs, and a crapload of other problems. It made it to 30,000 miles before I made earnhardts buy it back. the one I have now has had 2 transmissions as well. but that is about the only problem it has had. now with 91,000 miles and counting.
