Oh, and God help you for comparing American trucks to Japanese trucks.
You're right; Japanese trucks are much, much better than American trucks.

But, if Ford would put in an affordable 4 -cylinder TD, I'd take my chances.

In fact, my ideal truck would be a four door cab with a useable back seat, a six-foot bed, solid axles, and enough torque to tow a small camping trailer/two motorcycles/trailer full of home improvement supplies/etc. Basically, I want the kind of truck you'd find in the outback or the African savanna.

Hell, if any auto manufacturer could give me this, I'd make it fit into my budget.

I'd definitely be interested in this "new" truck if it indeed comes to be.

In the meantime, I might be getting a Ranger this winter. My grandfather has a '93 Ranger XLT, regular cab, 6ft bed, 4 cylinder, manual trans, that's he talking about selling soon. It has 87K on it, so it has TONS of life left in it as long as it's maintained well, which I do all my vehicles. If the price is right with the old man, I'll buy it. I just hope he doesn't try to jack me around on the price, or do like he did with the last 2 vehicles he had that I wanted to buy from him, a 93 Grand Marquis, and a 89 Ranger, the old man sold both of them out from under me. I really wanted the Grand Marquis. It was light blue with dark blue top and dark blue interior. Perfect condition cosmetically and mechanically. It was my grandmother's car before she passed, and he never drove the thing, so he traded it in on his Exploder he bought. It had the 5.0 in it(I'm pretty sure) and had less than 50K on the clock. Thing was beautiful. I'd have kept it just as it was and drove it daily. It would have been a great car, and kind of a way for me to keep my grandmother's memory alive. She pretty much raised me and my little sister because of my parents work schedule when we were young, so we spent the majority of everyday at my grandparents house, my grandfather worked for the post office, then after he retired from there, he got a job at an auto parts place and has been there for 13 years now, so my grandmother pretty much raised me and my sister. What is cool though, is I get to see my grandfather almost everyday I work, as the place he works at is our primary parts supplier and he's always at our shop. So, I get to bust his balls about working, and he returns the favor, of course, and we have some good laughs about work, and life in general.

Sorry to rant like that.

I would definitely look at one of these new trucks from Ford if/when they come about. I'd love it to have the small diesel too, that would rock! Get me a little diesel with an MTX, cab don't really matter, these new "small" trucks have enough room, even for me to be comfortable in a regular cab.

Sheesh it's about time!!

Anyway what's with the name change Ranger had such a strong following and heritage but changing it to F-100? That is what the F-150 had developed from way back when.

The Ranger used to be a model or trim on the F-series...so was the Explorer name....

Plus I'm willing to be thats is a ploy to keep the F-series (which the F-100 would fall under) as the best selling pickups in the world.

In reality the old F100 was basically the "base" F-Series truck, usually with smaller engine and such. You had the F-100, F-150 (1/2 ton), F-250 (3/4 ton), and F-350 (1 ton).

Off-topic but on subject, what exactly do the terms "1/2 ton", "3/4 ton", "1 ton" truck mean anyways?

Full-size pickups in North America are sold in three size ranges - ½ Ton, ¾ Ton and 1 Ton. These size ranges originally indicated the maximum payload of the vehicle, however modern pickups can typically carry far more than that. For example, the 2006 model Ford F-150 (a "½ Ton" pickup) has a payload of between 1,400 lb and 3,060 lb, depending on configuration. Likewise, the 2006 model F-350 (a "1 Ton" pickup) has a payload of between 4,000 lb and 5,800 lb depending on configuration.

1 short ton = 2 000 pounds

I understand the 1/2 ton to mean how much you can practically put in the bed after you put two *or four* passengers and a full tank of gas in it which won't match up to the GVW or GVWR.

In other words, 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, and 1 ton are real world while all the other numbers are government mandated specifications and ratings which are confusing and not applicable to a guy trying figure out if he can load 30 sheets of 3/4' plywood in his truck (The answer..... NO ! One panel equals 70 lbs times 30 equals 2100lbs)

speaking of, (off topic) I heard from somewhere that Toyota plans to dually the Tundra.
They need this. As of right now they don't have any 3500-series-level diesel dually to compete against Ford and Chevy in the work truck market. My girlfriend's dad's company uses Chevy 3500's and although they're intrigued with the way the Tundra is headed there's no way they'd consider one until there's a dually diesel with a higher towing rating

that be a 77, sir. or a 78 with a 77 grille.

I'm a bit of a late 70's truck fiend. Either way, beautiful hi-boy! :)
oh yeah, i always get it confused cus we have a 78 2wd Longbed that used to be the exact same colors as the 77 and they look almost identical. just with the square headlights.

I know some suppliers who will be VERY happy with this.

They were locked into long term contracts with fixed 5% cost givebacks year over year. They got into the contracts assuming that there would be changes over time, redesigns, which allows them to jack the price back up. This is standard practice.

But, the Ranger didn't change. I know the Trans Oil Cooler lines hadn't changed since 1987. 5% per year... Supplier was begging for a change.

the ranger was great many years ago, but its been time for it to go for a while now. I'm glad they're actually going to redesign it finally. Sad they'll make it larger than it currently is, they should totally keep it the same size because its got a niche market. Oh well.
